MIT Sloan School of Management Launches New Admissions Tips Video Series
The MIT Sloan School of Management has recently unveiled a new series of short videos featuring members of the admissions staff sharing tips and pointers related to the MBA application process at the school.
This series of six videos provides prospective applicants with an introduction to admissions staff members, including Associate Director of MBA Admissions Jeff Carbone and others. Each video addresses a different element of the MIT Sloan application, including the required and optional supplemental essays, the resume and standardized test scores. Additional videos provide information about the admissions office and what you’ll find there, as well as the optimal times to visit campus.
In his video, Carbone provides details about the new optional supplemental essay MIT Sloan has added to its application this year. Prospective applicants really have few limitations in term of what they can submit. The admissions office is happy to accept an additional essay, a PowerPoint presentation, a video, he says. In the event that you choose to submit a video, he does warn that it should be no longer than one minute and that it should not require Flash, since he and his team members review applications on iPads.
Shauna LaFauci Barry, another member of the admission team, devotes a separate video to discussing what MIT Sloan is looking for in answer to its two required essay questions. “Use detailed examples of past accomplishments in your essays,” she says. “We are looking for what you thought, felt, said or did … We are not able to evaluate data on what you might do in five or ten years or on any lessons you may have learned,” she adds.
Barry also encourages prospective applicants to make sure they answer MIT Sloan’s questions – not questions posed by another school. Finally, stick within the 500-word limit and use examples from within the last three years, she adds.
Though there is nothing earth-shatteringly revealing in this collection of short videos, it takes only a few minutes to watch the entire set – time well spent if you are preparing to complete an application for MIT Sloan’s MBA program.
