Yale School of Management Auction Raises Record Funds for Nonprofit Summer Internships

The Yale School of Management (SOM) Internship Fund Auction raised more money this year than ever before to help students afford summer internships in the nonprofit and public sectors and at social enterprises.

The annual auction raised $53,560 this year, besting last year’s record high of $51,433. The Internship Fund, the first of its kind among business schools in the nation, helps enable students to choose summer internships at nonprofits, social enterprises or in the public sector, positions that often pay little to no salary. Last year, the Fund supported 40 students.

Yale SOM’s auction dates back to 1979 and is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Organizers choose a theme each year and students come in costume. “It is indeed one of the most fun nights in the SOM calendar, where students get to bid alongside (and for!) their professors,” Joerose Tharakan ’12, an internship fund co-leader, said. “We truly see how multifaceted, talented, and integrated this community really is.”

The theme this year was “SOMer Lovin’,” a play on the musical Grease, and the event itself was billed as the SOM Prom. The top auction item this year was called the OB Crib Crawl, an event in which students are welcomed into the homes of the entire Organizational Behavior faculty. A large group of students purchased this item for $3,000. Other popular items included a night of poker and scotch with professors Jim Baron and Daylian Cain, an event offering insight into Dean Sharon Oster’s fashion sense, lunch with Professor Robert Shiller at legendary Yale restaurant Mory’s and a round of golf with incoming Dean Ted Snyder.
