MBA Admissions Mashup: Alumni Networks, Goals, and Reapplicants

MBA Admissions Mashup

Every Wednesday, we share a round-up of the latest news from MBA admissions blogs at the top business schools. This week we’re taking a look the alumni networks at Harvard Business School and UVA Darden as well as admissions insight from UT Austin McCombs and Northwestern / Kellogg.

One of the benefits of getting an MBA from a top business school is the caliber of the alumni network. Many alumni remain actively involved with the community — whether it’s through being an admissions interviewer or a mentor for MBAs as they go through recruiting. As a Harvard MBA, Carl Culicchia has grown to appreciate the HBS alumni family: “They are a remarkable group of people who share a “pay it forward” mentality. I have contacted many alumni during my second year, most of whom I have never met, and have always received warm and helpful responses. No matter how busy they are, they always seem to have time for HBS students.”

At UVA Darden, the school shows its appreciation for its alumni as well — in the form of free career coaching for life! This is made possible through the generosity of alumni. In a recent blog post, Jen Coleman, head of The Armstrong Center for Alumni Career Services at Darden believes that this service should be “one of the many factors you might consider when you are choosing an MBA program.”

For those of you currently in the midst of finishing up Round 1 applications (or even starting to prepare for Round 2), we have a couple of admissions tips for you today!

In case you missed it, last week, we posted an article on the importance of an MBA candidate’s goals. Whether or not those are personal or professional in nature, it is important to have a clear idea of where you’re headed. According to a recent post on the Northwestern / Kellogg admissions blog, “identifying your goals will ultimately help you discern your pursuits inside and outside of the classroom while you are at Kellogg. We want our applicants to think about the deeper reasons behind pursuing an MBA — why they’re doing it, where they’re trying to go, how this education and their career fit together — because it helps students hit the ground running once they arrive on campus.”

What if you’re a reapplicant? Worry not. Aside from grabbing the Clear Admit Reapplicant Strategy Guide, you can check out UT Austin / McComb’s recent advice for any of you that fit into this bucket. “Having applied in a previous year is not considered a negative factor in your application. We are pleased to see your continued interest in the program and will evaluate your new application on its merits, and in the context of the new applicant pool. Consider giving yourself a fresh start when you approach your new application. Think through and reassess your application, addressing any weak areas.”

That’s all for now! Catch you next time on another MBA Admissions Mashup!
