The Soaring Price of Business School Networking

A New York Times article this weekend examined the growing number of trips and other “lifestyle experiences” that now compete with academic ones as part of the MBA program at many leading business schools. Even those that don’t offer any form of academic credit can be viewed as valuable networking opportunities that can help position students for jobs upon graduation—worth their steep price tags in the eyes of some. Should Career Services Staff Weigh in on MBA Admissions Decisions? Wall Street Journal Consults Clear Admit for Insight

The Wall Street Journal recently turned to Clear Admit co-founder Graham Richmond to get his take on a trend taking hold in MBA admissions, namely, bringing in career services staff to evaluate candidates as part of the admissions process. A WSJ article published today reports that admissions staff at several top MBA programs, including UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, have begun to ask career services staff to sit in on committee meetings to help assess how realistic candidates’ stated career goals are or otherwise inform the admissions... Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, Verizon Unite on Healthcare Technology Initiatives

The MBA Health Sector Management (HSM) program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business this week launched a joint initiative with Verizon to develop health information technology designed to drive better care, expanded access and lower costs, the Durham school announced. Fuqua’s HSM program, the oldest and largest health management concentration among top U.S. business schools, enrolls 400 MBA students in its full-time and executive programs each year.
