Hi everyone! I am seeking advice on my current dilemma. I was accepted into an ivy league school with no scholarship and into a top 35 school with scholarship. My biggest concern is graduating with 200k+ in debt. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

anon23541 Likes Earned: 12 What are your post mba goals? The brand of an Ivy league program T-15 / M7 will carry more weight for you than a T-35 program will. If you are looking to go into a high paying field (consulting, finance, etc.) the scholarship shouldn't matter too much. (1)

It would be helpful to know more about your profile, the specific schools to which you have been accepted, and so on. Also, you will likely be more successful at either program if you have a clear vision for your post-MBA career goals - since consulting and financial services are two very different paths out of b-school. Lets assume you got into the lowest ranked ivey (cornell Johnson) and you want to work at MBB with a finance focus (consult for banks corp finance etc.)... and now you have to decide between johnson and let's say arizona state. The choice has to be cornell, the OCR at an ivey will be way better than at an arizona state. If I were you, I d compare starting salaries for both schools in consulting. You should also consider that MBB recruits on campus on all ivey league schools and that recruiting is usually done by school alumni. Shelling out 200k sucks, but you will make that money back within 5 to 6 years... In my opinion it is a no brainer (2)

anon26797 Likes Earned: 42 @16266 look at the employment reports. M7 is elite, top 10 is almost as elite in my opinion. There are several schools in the Top 15 that seem to always be a threat to crack the top 10 (yale ,virginia, nyu, duke, michigan) cornell does not seem to be part of that threat, but it is undeniably a top 15 school. Cornell = East coast UCLA in my opinion as far as prestige and opportunity goes. Undeniably strong but seemingly an afterthought for employers and mba candidates. (2)

anon42076 Likes Earned: 120 @85269 : Are you domestic? If yes, take Cornell. If no, take Wisconsin because it will be much harder for an international to get a job. Overall Cornell is a much better school, with a really strong sense of community. MBB are the top 3 consulting firms! McKinsey , Bain and BCG! (1)

anon11014 Likes Earned: 13 Doesn’t really matter what specific Ivy OP is referring to. OP could also be talking about Yale SOM or Dartmouth Tuck. Depends on the perception of what’s considered a T15. Many will agree that Tuck is really a top 10 and SOM’s recent placement into the top 10 has been controversial. Regardless of school (Cornell, Dartmouth, Yale), it will be far easier to score a consulting job either at MBB or in the tier 2 coming from ANY Ivy than it will from a top 35 school. It’s not impossible but it will be a lot harder and your GPA will matter a lot (especially considering all of the Ivies practice grade non-disclosure). It will come down to where you want to work (geographically speaking) and if you think you can study your ass off to pull strong grades. If you don’t care for being based in NYC and don’t mind a regional office then the top 35 can be a better option. Personally I would choose the top 35 as I think 200K in loans is absolutely insane and bc you can still get into consulting from here (in fact, it may even be easier to score MBB from here if you’re not dead set on working in a big city). anon11014 Likes Earned: 13 @26797 Cornell is definitely not an east coast UCLA. Employment opportunities are much better at Cornell especially for IB. Really depends on what specifically you want to pursue professionally and where, and how the school fares for opportunities in that field. UCLA is great and class profiles might be more in line btwn it and Cornell but overall strength of the departments, recruiting, and general university opportunities are not. Generally speaking T15 schools are Darden, Fuqua, Johnson, Ross, SOM. (2)

anon85269 Likes Earned: 25 OP - Thank you all for your input. I really appreciate your feedback. I have made a decision and will be attending Wisconsin. This will better suit my circumstances. Since I am not aiming for one of the highest paying careers such as IB, I do not feel confortable graduating with $250k in debt. Thank you all again! (1)
