Post MBA Career: Consulting, Investment Banking

Notes:

International student from Asia. Torn between Duke and Yale — love both vibes. Hard to write off Yale given parent uni prestige. If I can’t get a job in the US and return home, Yale seems to carry more weight. Leaning toward consulting but IB also in mind. Is the extra cost worth it?

alexbr4 Verified User. Likes Earned: 1834 That’s a really hard question. I’d think Fuqua, with the extra money, makes best sense, if you only focus on the MBA brand and short term opportunities. But I do understand the Yale brand carrier more weight, internationally. I’d look to see how strong Fuqua’s network is in your home region? (0)

anon10646 Likes Earned: 857 Where in Asia may also impact -- East Asia where there is some real prestige splitting and salaries are still decent or maybe SEA where the tiering may not be as dramatic and salaries may be lower, so scholarships would play a bigger risk reducer? Not getting a US job -- If you approach MBA recruiting correctly for current MBA job market it's more 'not getting the US jobs I want', than not getting a US job period. At Fuqua or SOM, T15 tier, you'd still have strong consulting or IB placement generally, but may include more T2 or lower tier banks than prior years. Don't go in MBB-or-bust or just focusing on top banks; vary your networking attention and be realistic on chances even if you have traction in places. Find a solid placement which sponsors out of the MBA and then you can lateral later on. Then if consulting/IB doesn't feel like it's working, be prepared to pivot and have a plan B charted out; internal strategy, etc. Next steps I'd take -- 1) try to figure out if IB or consulting is going to be your focus. If undecided, you only have a few weeks of IB recruiting before consulting recruiting is in swing and you need to consider where you'll focus. 2) Figure out if you have any major updates since your app that you could put in a $ appeal to SOM or at least good reasons why SOM is your top choice and why you'd be an asset within the class. Extra 10-30k may make it an easier choice. With choices as-is I agree with taking Fuqua $$. Unless you think prospects at home is a better backup if you don't get your top US job choices, or funding isn't a top concern, Fuqua and SOM have close employment prospect. (2)

You mentioned that you are deciding between Fuqua and Yale SOM. As Alex and 10646 mentioned, both are great MBA programs that would provide you with opportunities to pursue either a consulting or banking career post MBA. Given the $60k in extra funding from Fuqua, the Fuqua offer is quite attractive. (0)
