Recruiting for investment banking in NYC - deciding which is better from a finance recruiting perspective. Any insight would be appreciated!

eliot Verified User. Likes Earned: 2066 Both Johnson and Tuck are great MBA programs with a solid track record of IB placement in NYC. Looking at the 2024 employment reports

Tuck: IB: 37 (17.1%) Northeast: 143 (66%) Total Finance: 52 (24%)

Johnson: IB: 65 (31.6%) Northeast: 130 (63%) Total Finance: 87 (42.2%)

Meaning, either program would provide you with ample options to land a IB job in NYC. Given that, do you have any personal preferences between these two programs? I also encourage you to visit both programs and chat with current students.

anon10646 Likes Earned: 876 NYC offices will be the default in either case. If place elsewhere it'll be because you're actively seeking it, either for geographic preferences or you're targeting a group that's strong outside of NYC. Tuck will have a higher placement ceiling and seems to do well with EB's. It's going to be a bit less structured and a smaller cohort, so there is perhaps more of a chance you'll completely strike out. Johnson is a volume IB school. The top students will have great placements, but the average placement will be a lower because the range of students vying for IB will be wider. Johnson alumni at banks try hard to get support their pipelines and interviews/offers are actively spread out to avoid too much going to some candidates, so generally you're less likely to completely strike out on IB. If you're coming from something pre-MBA that was not very IB related or you're someone that does not do well in interviews, then the structure of Johnson will help. (3)

anon10646 Likes Earned: 876 NP. Also, while noting Johnson alumni work to maintain pipeline at their banks, I did not go to Tuck but I had Tuck alumni at banks go out of the way to help me secure two superdays. The smaller cohort but strong alumni network plays an advantage. (2)
