4 years of work experience when applying R1 2026.

1 year of experience in the San Diego Area working on maintenance and safety projects working in multidisciplinary teams across a range of functional units. Designed projects and conducted safety and construction reviews of these projects during and after construction primarily near the Arizona border.

1.5 years of experience working on large scale construction projects in the Bay Area. Projects totaling over 100 million dollars. Was the lead construction engineer under the supervision of a professionally licensed civil engineer. Working with multiple units at CalTrans and contractors to complete a project.

1 Year as a designer in the Bay Area working on designing large scale projects. Currently working on 2 projects both totaling over 100 million dollars. Working with 10+ units in CalTrans as well as outside private consultants to design different aspects of the projects.

Currently planning on applying with Haas as a reach school and UC Irvine and Davis as safe schools. The rest being targets. Would love some advice on other schools I should be targeting beside the ones listed as an engineer.

For the “Why MBA” the reasons I am considering an MBA is to develop my business knowledge due to being from a technical heavy background in undergraduate and my current job. I am technical skill heavy with little business skills. Learning the business knowledge from an MBA would allow me to diversify my career options and allow for more career advancement options and allow me to open doors to other industries such as real estate or tech. Post MBA I would like to pursue jobs in an industry such as real estate, tech or consulting which would allow me to gain more job experience and learn more about business and develop my soft business skills. Outside of work I am involved in my family business and also a member of Engineers without borders. Work wise I am a part of the hiking club. My hobbies include traveling, basketball, and powerlifting. I don’t not have any leadership roles in these extracurriculars which I’m not sure will hurt my chances. My impact at work has been increasing over the years being a part of a rotational program. I have slowly developed skills which have allowed me to take on more meaningful projects over time and also helping new engineers through mentoring. I am able to get strong recommendations displaying my increased responsibility throughout the years and the work I have done training new engineers. These recommenders can also talk about my skills working on large infrastructure projects with multiple functional units and contractors. For the GPA I went through some health issues during my first 2 years of undergrad however my GPA had an upward trend until my last semester of undergrad where it dropped due to a death in the family. Being an Asian American I had a question regarding if my GMAT should be higher due to being from an over represented pool. Thanks for the help. (0)

alexbr4 Verified User. Likes Earned: 1839 If there is scope to improve your GMAT, that might well be worth doing, as long as it doesn’t delay your applications. Round 1 will be best, if you think you might be over-represented. Your “why MBA” makes great sense. But it would be better if you had more focused post MBA goals? Perhaps consulting (tech consulting) in the short run, with a more aspirational long term goal. These goals may shift, over time, but they will help guide your application strategy, and potentially make you a stronger candidate. So I’d spend some time developing that aspect of your profile. (0)
