Still deciding between CBS and Sloan. Sloan felt like the better fit, but people keep telling me CBS is better for asset management. With how relatively untread this career path is for MBAs, I can't validate how true that is. Employment reports aren't substantively different. The full ride from CBS does make for a noticeable $30k delta though...

anon10646 Likes Earned: 863 I wouldn't call it untread, just less of a structured path compared to the IB, Consulting, Tech of the MBAverse. I think what people are telling you is based on CBS being known as a finance school overall, but if you look at the employment reports excluding IB, the stats for PE/VC/IM buyside type ops is basically the same. I used to work buyside in Boston pre-MBA (middle office) and there is a ton of firms there; GMO, Baupost, Wellington, Fidelty, THL, Bain Cap, TA etc etc and then there is investment arms of places like Liberty Mutual, as well as PWM with internal teams. Firms go to MIT for MSF and MBAs (+ others if quant) candidates and NYC is 3-4 hours down the road. I'd agree with @anon60657 and say $30k when you're going into finance post-MBA is nothing and if Sloan feels like a better fit, I'd feel comfortable going there. However, two things to consider here is your pre-MBA work and sponsorship. Buyside cares more about what your pre-MBA was and your translatable skills (versus IB where they can train most) since it's not as structured of an onboarding and training. I'm assuming you have investment experience? Then it's relatively known that buyside mostly does not sponsor and even international already in buyside pre-MBA have more limited placement solely because of this. Assuming you're not a US-citizen in Japan, then this is something you need to account for and if the backup of IB at somewhere like CBS will be valuable. (2)

tiancius Likes Earned: 10 Great points on perspective, thank you both. @anon10646, I'm actually a US citizen that happens to be working in Japan currently, but thanks for looking out! And yes, sort of, I was in operations at a mutual fund and then a hedge fund previously. It'll be a challenge to pivot, but hopefully doable. (3)

anon28599 Likes Earned: 76 Would you like to be more quant (Sloan) or fundamental bottom-up (CBS) style of investor? CBS may give you better access to smaller Hedge Funds or Boutiques, while Sloan will give you a shot at the big names in Boston (Wellington, Fidelity, MFS, Putnam, T Rowe, etc). Both will give you opportunities at companies that have established MBA pipeline recruiting (PIMCO, Cap Group, Dimensional, etc). Sloan has the edge on Bridgewater, but they don't exactly recruit MBAs for investing roles. Ultimately you can't go wrong with either. I'd pick Sloan, quant/systematic is the new wave of the future and the faculty (Merton, Lo, etc) are on top of it. Some of CBS's finance resources will be taken up with banking recruiting, while all finance resources in Sloan go to Inv Mgmt, since virtually no ones recruits in Banking in MIT (or Harvard). But like I said, great options! Best of luck! (3)
