Have worked in strategy/policy at a large utility for 3 or so years now, mostly focused on transmission and energy policy. Much more focused on policy but I have some financial experience. Product Manager as a short term goal - has an effect on my chances?
Hello, thanks for taking your time to review my request.
I am a data scientist who built actual A.I models in the past along with publishing a patent. I worked at a deep tech startup based in Cali (but had an office in India where I worked from) where I built core A.I model of a product whose annual recurring revenue was $18M with 7 fortune 500 clients. Also collaborated in another product that had a $5M revenue but a single client. Received two promotions starting from Intern -> DS 1 -> DS2 in 3.5 years. The A.I model I built had a 10x throughput (meaning 10 times faster than an actual human) and I helped (along with product manager) in redesigning workflows in org. Before I started working in the A.I model, the revenue was $5M (ofcourse not just me but a lot of people were involved here).
In current role at a big MNC, although I don't build A.I, it's still technical work where I own a dataset which is sold to various customers. The dataset was handled by an external consultant for 27 years when the company hired me to bring it in-house. My manager and everyone in team are economists and I was the solo technical guy - so it was a huge responsibility to have their faith in me. Within an year, I had great success, a new annual release of the dataset so far resulted in revenue increase by 4x. The improved dataset allowed my team (who are full of economists, I am the only tech guy in the team) to get consultancy projects with major international organizations (Governments, International Non-Profit orgs think UN, Finance institutions). I helped with the technical analysis behind the projects as well. Received 120% annual bonus as well. The value of consultancy projects would be at least $400,000 (we are a small team of 6) and based in Europe (I work remote from India).
Now for my short term goal for my MBA essays, I am planning to mention Product manager because:
1. I currently lead a product (dataset to be precise) - end to end from technical development, future outlooks, participation in sales call.
2. Experience building the core A.I product in a startup.
The issue is I am also open to consultancy too. I am also aware some schools like Duke or Yale don't really have much outcomes of students getting into product manager or tech. Will having product manager as short term goal effect my application to such colleges?
I am an Indian graduated from IIT (equivalent to Ivy League) with 4yrs Workex will be having 5 when I join MBA. Gmat is 685 and my school shortlists include Foster, McCombs, Scheller, Emory (all in major cities so better chance of getting a job), Tepper-Darden-Duke-Ross are slightly ambitious schools in my opinion for me and will apply to Owen as well. MIT or Haas will be my dream admits.
I'm not looking at T10 because coming from over-represented group reduces my chances and scholarships too.
What I would like to get an opinion of:
1. Will product manager as a short term goal suffice for schools that are finance or consulting heavy? I'm open to consulting as short term goal but perhaps tough to convince the adcom? I can figure out what I actually want once I'm in B-school but before that I need to get an admit.
2. Am I underselling myself by applying to above colleges or am I being reasonable.
3. Although at my startup the product revenue increased from $5M to $18M during my tenure with my A.I model being a core driver, I hope it's ok if I claim the revenue increase without mentioning many others who worked on it as well (such as sales, my manager etc). I see this is a common trend in the industry where it is taken for obvious that others would also be part of revenue improvements.
Please note I'm not a data analyst, a data analyst's work is not highly technical but my work is. I'm closer to a software engineer than a data analyst.
Also no volunteering experience (it's not a culture in India, anyone who says otherwise would have worked less than 15hrs a year on it.)
I am a big economics geek as well, I read annual reports of companies, read the FED's forecasts & speeches too. Also a screenplay writer for shortfilms (part of a small film group).

I would appreciate your honest opinion on my profile and whether I would be a competitive applicant for top MBA programs.
My short-term goal is to transition into Investment Banking, ideally in M&A, and eventually move into Impact Investing. Although I don't have direct experience in either field, I have a strong finance background, and pursuing an MBA is an important step for me to make this career pivot.
In my current role, I have led several finance-related projects, including managing the financial tracking and payments for a USD 1 million edtech project supporting the education of underprivileged children. I also persuaded management to implement a new expense-tracking system, which helped reduce costs by approximately USD 50,000, along with several other initiatives.
Outside of work, I served in the Teach For India program for two years, teaching underprivileged children. I am currently a United Nations volunteer, where I lead volunteers from different countries in fundraising initiatives for education and other social causes. I am also a member of the Indian Red Cross Society, supporting fundraising and relief efforts during floods and other natural disasters.
Additionally, I have earned the CFI Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) certification and the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification to strengthen my finance knowledge and support my career goals.
Since I come from an overrepresented applicant pool, I know the competition is intense. I also come from a small local company rather than a well-known multinational, and my undergraduate GPA is average from a Tier 2 university.
In your opinion, would my GRE score, work experience, leadership, volunteer activities, and professional certifications help offset those factors? Do you think I would be a competitive applicant for top MBA programs?
