Hello Alex and Graham. I’ve absolutely enjoyed hearing your podcast every week. I hope you guys are doing well. I was wondering if it’s possible for an Indian to get in Sloan/Simon for R2 without a gmat.
I have done a Bachelor of Commerce degree in a top 10 college in India. MS in Accounting at Pace university and have completed my CPA.
My work experience includes one year at KPMG before my masters. After my masters, I worked as a programme coordinator at a newly started startup accelerator programme for women in South Asia. This organisation helps to guide and mentor women entrepreneurs with workshops and sessions from CEO’s and industry leaders and my Job involved helping to organise this for a year. The programme has been recently ranked as one of Asia’s best startup accelerator programmes by Forbes.
After which , I rejoined my family business which has varied investment portfolios across equity and real estate. The why right now is to get a strong finance base and to get some experience in venture capital at the US, before starting a venture capital vertical in my family office eventually.
I have heard that Indian colleges are not recognised in the US other than the IIT’s. How true is this? Thanks a lot.

alexbr4 Verified User. Likes Earned: 1572 Why are you choosing not to take the GMAT? Surely it will limit the number of options open to you. While IITs may be more renown, students from other colleges are eligible. The issue may be whether it’s a 4 year degree equivalent, some MBA programs may be concerned with that. VC is notoriously difficult to enter, post MBA, so that may be another challenge you’ll face, if that is your short term goal. (1)

anon42076 Likes Earned: 120 Hi Alex. This was a sudden decision to do an MBA because of the economic slowdown caused by COVID. I’ve not had time to prep for the GMAT. I found that these 2 schools have waived off the requirement along with Darden. Yes, it is a 4 year equivalent because my college provided us with the option of doing a Diploma for another year. I also have a masters degree from the US and the CPA. So should I reconfigure my goals to IB? I just want a strong base in finance. I could do the VC work exp in India itself via connections. (1)

alexbr4 Verified User. Likes Earned: 1572 IB will make more sense. Understood, re the Covid situation. Simon May be more accessible for you. R2 will make this all the more challenging. You do have a couple of months to prepare and sit the GMAT, which might open up more options? (1)

anon42076 Likes Earned: 120 I don’t mind taking the GMAT and even deferring by a year because I value my return on investment. Do I have a realistic shot at M7 with a 720 or 320 GRE? The only doubt I had was my undergrad would disqualify me, even though it’s a T10 college in India for commerce. Columbia J term would be a good option? What do you think? (0)

anon42076 Likes Earned: 120 I should still keep the venture capital angle as part of my essays, right? The women owned companies from the non profit have raised up to 8 million $ collectively. I’ve had the opportunity to observe this from close quarters. (0)

alexbr4 Verified User. Likes Earned: 1572 Yes, I’d keep it as part of your story. With your masters etc. I’m sure you’ll be fine re your undergrad. Waiting a year, as long as that’s a productive year for you, getting good scores on the GMAT or GRE (I’d say above 320) and applying in round 1 may well open up better options. (1)
