Looking to do VI, background is in finance but not directly IM. My decision is based on my impression that Wharton is awesome for IM IF you already have an IM background. Columbia's location is key in order to do internships that can set you up for summer internships as well as do constant networking. Booth is awesome but do not like Chicago

IM hopeful Likes Earned: 0 In a very similar situation with a finance/sell-side background as well. How far disconnected is your finance background from IM? I've heard some opinions on it obvs, but what are your thoughts on the competitiveness of getting into the VI program? (0)

OP Likes Earned: 0 I work in investing consulting so it is indirectly related but definitely not buyside. Even in my interview with Wharton, my second-year admitted it is super difficult to break into IM from Wharton without relevant buyside experience due to the lack of networking access. I know 4 people that wanted to get into IM, chose Wharton over CBS and now regret it. (0)

Anon Likes Earned: 0 My brother went to a top IM firm (think Vanguard/PIMCO/Fidelity) from Wharton. There were 4 summer interns (him, one other W, two from H). Even with that, hes the only one who was asked back full-time. He was IB/PE prior to that. Regardless if you choose Columbia or Wharton, it will be extremely competitive, so go with best fit. (0)

@IM hopeful Likes Earned: 0 It is competitive indeed. Have heard that around 120 people apply and only 40 make it. With that said, don't look at VI as the only game at CBS. Remember VI is about a style, not necessarily prestige. I also know CBS kids that didn't get into VI and got full time positions at top hedge and mutual funds and they were competing with VI kids. So don't sweat it too much if you don't get in. (0)
