UMD Smith employs a rolling, holistic application process. Applicants entering the full-time MBA in the Fall must apply by March (for international students) and April (for domestic students) of the same year. Academics

Faculty

The UMD Smith School faculty is made up of nearly 170 full-time professionals, as well as many more part-time faculty, all of whom bring their significant expertise to the classroom. They comprise six academic departments: Accounting & Information Assurance; Decision, Operations, & Information Technology; Finance; Logistics, Business, & Public Policy; Management & Organization; and Marketing. Furthermore, many of the professors have worked as consultants for leading corporations or worked in the international business realm.

Curriculum

The UMD Smith School’s full-time MBA requires 54 credits to complete, and the program lasts for two years. Students begin the program in August.

Core courses, which cover topics such as financial accounting, managerial economics, and strategic management, encourage students to master business fundamentals. These make up 36 of the required 54 credits. Furthermore, the program offers students five career tracks to choose from: AI & Business Strategy, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Finance, Marketing, and Sustainability. In each track, MBA students take courses that will prepare them for their futures in that specialty. For instance, MBA students on the Finance track will complete elective courses focused on managing financial risk or making strategic investments. Specialized tracks are built from electives, which students can mix and match according to their specific career goals.

In addition, the UMD Smith School provides many opportunities for international travel. MBA students may participate in summer programs, semester-long exchange programs, and shorter, faculty-led study abroad experiences.

Other MBA Degree Options

The UMD Smith School also offers a Flex (part-time) MBA, an Online MBA, and an Executive MBA. The Flex MBA can be completed in between 24 and 28, months, and students choose whether to take their classes online or in person. On-campus classes take place in Rockville, MD; Baltimore, MD; or Washington, D.C. Fifty-four credits are required for completion. Students have an average of five years’ working experience and represent a variety of industries and academic backgrounds.

The Online MBA takes place over 24 months and requires 54 credits for completion. Aside from a two-day, on-campus residency at the beginning of the program, all coursework takes place online. Students have an average of 5.4 years of work experience. They hail from areas all over the United States, and many international students also pursue this degree.

Lastly, the Executive MBA offers an average of three in-person classes per month, over one Friday and two Saturdays, supplemented by self-paced study during the week. The UMD Smith EMBA program is cohort-based and places a strong emphasis on diverse perspectives, the development of business acumen, and the use of emerging technology. The UMD Smith EMBA is designed for ambitious students with at least eight years of work experience, three of which must have been in a management role. In the Class of 2022, for example, students had an average of 17 years of work experience.

Campus Life

Clubs, Conferences, & Competitions

Several clubs invite MBA students to get more involved with the UMD Smith School community. The clubs focus on particular areas of study (such as the Maryland Consulting Club or cultural affinity (such as the Asian MBA Association).

Furthermore, the UMD Smith School offers several conferences, such as the upcoming 2025 Sustainability in Business Conference, where industry leaders, students and faculty will discuss the most pressing challenges facing the world of business today.

Lastly, the Pitch Dingman Competition, formerly the Cupid’s Cup, is the University of Maryland’s annual venture competition. Here, students and alumni pitch their entrepreneurial ventures and compete for seed funding; 86% of those who have won since 2016 are still operating their businesses.

Many options are available to aid UMD Smith students with tuition fees. In fact, 99% of the incoming class of 2025 received some level of financial award. Applicants are automatically considered for merit awards based on scholastic achievement, test scores, and leadership experience. Those who submit by priority deadlines have more chance of success than those who don’t. Furthermore, full-time MBA students may qualify for graduate assistantships in exchange for a partial tuition waiver. These positions are awarded on merit. Scholarships are also available for military service members and veterans. Federal student loans may be available for qualified students with a FAFSA application.
