Current serving Australian navy intelligence officer with experience leading cyber operations. ECs: published in defence journals and contribute to a military strategy blog, serve as a gender advisor on deployments, play guitar and speak German. Want to transition to MBB to get business exposure before moving to general management at a large company (possibly aerospace/defence sector). Goal is HBS as the case method and focus on decisive leadership appeals, plus veterans do well there.

Make sure to reach out to the veterans’ clubs of the programs you apply. Impact should be a good theme in your applications. Your experiences are also very topical, so that should add to your candidacy. Great numbers aligns with everything else, I think. (1)

Three thoughts: 1. your ECs that are differentiated from your professional experience may carry more value than those related to your career; this is because the very top schools value well-rounded candidates with diverse interests...so keep up the music and language efforts. 2. MBB makes a lot of sense as a great way to transition from military to business. With that said, I would encourage you to think through the specifics of a long-term plan and to have that plan somehow tie into your experience to date (cyber security, defenses, aerospace, etc.). 3. I would also think that Wharton makes sense here for the strength of network (arguably second only to HBS), international reputation, academic rigor, and fit with your career plans. Best of luck!
