Duration: ~18–20 minutes total

What questions were you asked?
The interview was fairly short and conversational. The structured question portion lasted around 10 minutes, and the rest of the time was for my questions.

Questions asked:
-Walk me through your résumé.
-Why Rice?
-What are your short-term and long-term goals?
-What is your Plan B if consulting does not work out immediately?
-How do you work in diverse environments? Have you experienced any conflict working with people from different backgrounds?
-Is Rice your first choice?
-Is there anything else you would like the admissions committee to know?

For the final question, I shared a personal story about my volunteer work at a bird sanctuary and community conservation efforts.

What type of interview was it?
It was clearly a résumé-based interview. The interviewer seemed to only have my résumé and asked questions based on my background and career goals. It felt more like a community fit conversation than a technical or stress interview.

What did you think of the interview?
The overall tone was very friendly and relaxed. The interviewer was attentive and the conversation flowed naturally. It did not feel like an interrogation at all.
At the beginning, the interviewer briefly explained how the interview would be structured. At the end, he also explained the next steps in the process, mentioning that he would submit his report to the admissions committee and that they would make the final decision.

What surprised you?
The main surprise was the short duration of the interview. The core questions were completed quite quickly, in about 10 minutes. Another surprise was that the interviewer did not explicitly ask the typical “Why MBA?” question, although the resume walkthrough and career goals discussion indirectly covered that topic.

What didn’t surprise you?
The questions themselves were fairly standard MBA interview questions, focusing on career goals, school fit, and teamwork experience. The question about whether Rice was my first choice also seemed consistent with what other applicants have mentioned about Rice interviews.

What might you conclude about the school based on this experience?
The experience reinforced the impression that Rice emphasizes community fit and collaboration. The interview felt more like a conversation to understand how I would contribute to the class rather than a strict evaluation. It also seemed that the school values applicants who have a clear understanding of how Rice fits into their career plans.

Advice for future applicants:
-Be prepared to explain your résumé clearly and concisely, since that drives most of the conversation.
-Have clear short-term and long-term goals, as that question comes up quickly.
-Be ready to discuss how you work with people from different backgrounds.
-Expect a conversational tone rather than a grilling.
-Prepare a few thoughtful questions for the interviewer since there may be time for them.
