Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I chose to attend business school to pivot from architecture into real estate development to continue building the foundation for the rest of my career. I aspire to evaluate projects from both design and financial perspectives while making a lasting impact on our communities in the process. Why now? After obtaining my architectural license and having experience in residential and commercial architecture, I felt prepared to leverage these experiences along with an MBA in a real estate development role.
Why did you choose Rice Business? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I chose Rice Business for its curriculum, location and alumni network. I knew I wanted a technical degree to complement my architecture background and a curriculum that allowed me to explore real estate courses, which Rice has a degree specialization in. Rice also has a fantastic alumni network, especially in Houston, that is eager to recruit and mentor students.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
I am a licensed architect in the state of Texas trained in classical architecture. This allows me to bring a detail-oriented, disciplined work ethic and a fine appreciation for art. I get stuff done, but always set aside time to pursue my other artistic and social interests, which I hope to bring to the class of 2027.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I lived in Rome for seven months learning about Italian architecture and urban design. Although my Italian is a little rusty now, I used to be able to speak conversationally.
Post-MBA career interests:
Post-MBA, I am exploring real estate development roles, where I hope to make significant and lasting impacts on the built environment by pursuing projects that are both socially impactful and financially successful.
Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I met with a few members of the admissions team and talked with several current students throughout the application process, which I would definitely do again. It made me even more sure of my decision to apply to Rice Business and that the pivot I was exploring would be worth it.
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
Ideally, I would have given myself more time for testing. I had to cram in studying to make the Round 1 cut-off and thankfully I got the score I wanted, but it was still quite stressful!
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Similar to my answer above, I completely understand that testing is important, but I wish I could have skipped it. I was also working on my architectural license exams at the same time, so it was just a lot of studying at once. Strategically prioritizing my time and keeping a schedule helped me get through it. Be sure to make lots of time with friends and family!
What is your initial impression of the Rice Business students/culture/community?
The culture at Rice Business is extremely supportive and welcoming. You don’t understand inventory in accounting? Someone will help walk you through it. You aren’t sure about your cover letter for a company you really want to work for? Someone will offer to read over it and provide feedback.
What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
So far, I have joined the Rice Business Real Estate Association(REA), Women’s Organization (RBWO), and Cork & Cask Club. REA has already done an amazing job of organizing various events for members to be exposed to different aspects of the real estate industry and networking events. I joined RBWO to meet other women at Rice Business outside of my cohort and to take part in leadership events and workshops. I joined the Cork & Cask Club with my fiance to meet and engage with more students while exploring new wines and spirits. Cheers!
What is one thing you have learned about Rice Business that has surprised you?
One thing that has surprised me is just how accomplished Rice Business students are. There are lawyers, doctors, veterans and so many more professions from across the world in our classes that each provide unique perspectives that we can all learn from.
What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am most excited about building long-lasting relationships with my fellow classmates, professors and industry colleagues.
