Michael Miller, Rice Business MBA Class of 2027
Age: 31
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Duke University, Psychology
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Four years consulting in financial services; three years in corporate development mergers and acquisitions (M&A)
Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I enjoyed working on live deals during my time in corporate development on an M&A team, but I wanted broader exposure to more complex transactions and financial products. Pursuing an MBA felt like the natural next step to advance my career toward those goals.
Why did you choose Rice Business? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I knew I wanted to transition into investment banking (IB) and stay in Houston, and Rice Business stood out as the ideal school to help me achieve that goal given its strong track record of placing students in the IB industry.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
I believe my most valuable and differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027 is the combination of my professional experience and my team-oriented mindset. Having led over two dozen M&A transactions in corporate development, I bring a deep understanding of deal execution, financial analysis and strategic thinking that I’m eager to share with my classmates. Just as importantly, my background as a former Division I varsity swimmer has instilled in me resilience, discipline and a collaborative spirit — qualities I plan to bring to study groups, class projects and the broader Rice Business community. This blend of technical expertise and a team-first mentality will allow me to contribute meaningfully to both the academic and cultural fabric of the program.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would visit Rice University again (or wherever you hope to attend). It was wonderful getting to know the first years (now second years) and learning from their experiences.
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would apply earlier. I applied in one of the later rounds and felt rushed to get everything done.
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The most challenging part for me was the stress of preparing the application. As I mentioned, I applied in a later round, and if given another opportunity, I would take more time to prepare and apply earlier, which would have given me more time to relax, enjoy my summer and spend time with my team leading up to orientation.
What is your initial impression of the Rice Business students/culture/community?
The students I’ve met so far are ambitious and driven, yet also approachable and genuinely supportive of one another. I’ve been impressed by how eager everyone is to share advice, make connections and help each other succeed — whether it’s through recruiting prep, class projects or extracurricular activities.
What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
I’m looking forward to joining the Golf Club. I grew up playing golf, but other commitments and responsibilities eventually took priority. I’m excited to start playing again and improve my game with this community.
What is one thing you have learned about Rice Business that has surprised you?
One thing that has surprised me about Rice Business is how accessible and supportive the entire community is; students, faculty, alumni and even the administration. I expected a strong academic program and great recruiting opportunities, but I didn’t anticipate just how collaborative and tight-knit the culture would be. Everyone I’ve met has been eager to share insights, make introductions and offer guidance, which creates an environment that feels both high-performing and genuinely welcoming.
What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am most excited about the Global Field Experience. I enjoy traveling, and I see this as a great opportunity to bond with my cohort while gaining valuable global exposure and hands-on experience.
