Out of 7,259 applicants–just shy of last year’s high application volume–the Stanford Graduate School of Business welcomed 434 new students to its MBA Class of 2027. The report opens with the remarks, “Each class brings new perspectives and talents to Stanford GSB. We’re committed to bringing together high-potential leaders from all backgrounds and creating a community where everyone can flourish. With our intentionally small class size, every person matters.”
Diverse Representation
Stanford GSB maintains high international representation, with 38 percent of the class representing 64 different countries. Women make up 45 percent of the class, adding one percent to last year. Fifty-five percent of the class’s U.S. citizens and permanent residents identify as people of color, a two percent increase over last year. Under federal reporting guidelines, 29 percent identify as Asian, seven percent as Black/African American, and 11 percent as Hispanic/Latino. Seven percent reported as multi-race.

Academic and Professional Background
This year’s class holds degrees from 190 different academic institutions. Fifteen percent hold advanced degrees. Twenty-nine percent had majored in engineering during their undergraduate years, followed by 24 percent in business/commerce. Eighteen percent had majored in economics followed by 12 percent each in the social sciences or math/sciences. Five percent earned degrees in arts/humanities. All together, their average undergraduate GPA landed at a strong 3.76.

Fifty-eight percent of the class submitted GMAT scores and 44 percent submitted GRE scores, with some students submitting scores from both tests. While the average GMAT (10th edition) score of the Class of 2027 matched last year’s impressive 738, the Stanford MBA program does not require a minimum score for applicants. The range of GMAT (10th edition) scores landed at 540 to 780. The average score for the GMAT (Focus) came in at 689 with the range of scores landing between 615 and 785. The average GRE scores for the new Stanford MBA Class of 2027 clocked in at 164 for both Quant and Verbal. The average TOEFL score was reported as 112.

The new Stanford MBAs matriculated with an average of 5.3 years of work experience. Twenty percent came from consulting and another 17 percent had worked in investment management, private equity, or venture capital roles. Fifteen percent of the class hailed from the technology sector. Nine percent of the class previously worked in government, education, or the nonprofit sector while seven percent each have worked in consumer products and services or healthcare.
