Devon Crittenden, Chicago Booth MBA Class of 2027

Age: 27
Hometown: Boston, MA
Undergraduate Institution and Major: B.S. in Biochemistry and Chemistry from Brandeis University
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Director of Strategy and Operations at Reboot Rx, a nonprofit biotech start-up, for 5 years

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
Coming from a start-up, I was simultaneously overqualified and underqualified for the strategic roles that I am drawn to. I have gained direct experience successfully managing research and operational efforts that typically would be led by people with advanced degrees and many more years of experience. I knew an MBA would be transformational in fast-tracking my career progression by building a strong professional network and enhancing my personal development, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. It felt like the right moment to take a deliberate step back, learn, and level up.

Why did you choose Chicago Booth? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I chose Chicago Booth after attending the First Day for Admitted Students. It was a whirlwind to meet so many current and prospective students and faculty, while learning about everything the school has to offer. Booth’s emphasis on analytical rigor, strategic thinking, and diverse perspectives immediately stood out. I could tell Booth would challenge me to grow as a thinker and a leader.

On a personal note, I was living in Chicago and love the city, so I was very excited to stay! Most students live in the heart of the city, so there’s always something going on. In September, I ran a 10K race up the Magnificent Mile that went right by the Booth “dorms.”

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
My nonprofit background is unique at Booth. My career goal is to drive transformative change in healthcare through strategic leadership and a mission-driven approach. This focus is rooted in a commitment to improving patient outcomes and addressing the most pressing challenges in healthcare, such as equitable access to effective treatments and the efficient management of resources.

At a nonprofit, I learned to measure success not just in financial terms, but by the impact on people’s lives. I hope to bring that social impact lens to class discussions and group projects, balancing purpose with performance in a way that complements my classmates’ perspectives.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I have a five-year-old dog named Milo, who running along Lake Michigan with me before class.

Post-MBA career interests:

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would talk to as many current students and alumni as possible, both virtually and in person. Those conversations gave me an authentic sense of Booth’s culture and community. The people and network are such an integral part of the experience in school and beyond. It’s important to find a place where you truly connect with the environment.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I wish I had taken a more targeted approach for which schools would be a good fit for me earlier on. For example, really digging into the types of roles and industries each school is known for. It would have saved a lot of time by making my application process much more focused.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Applications, testing, and essays took a lot of time to submit! It helped to spend the day in a new coffee shop each weekend with friends to power through the process together.

What is your initial impression of the Chicago Booth students/culture/community?
Booth’s culture is incredibly supportive and grounded. Everyone I’ve met is open, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in helping each other succeed. I’ve also been amazed by the diversity of experiences in the classroom. In just a few weeks, I’ve learned about industries from soap R&D to investment management from my classmates. The mix of humility, curiosity, and intellect is amazing.

What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
I have joined the Management Consulting Group and the Health Care Group to support my recruiting efforts in those industries. I also joined Chicago Women in Business (CWiB) and Booth Dance Club. They’re a great balance between professional development and pure fun.

What is one thing you have learned about Chicago Booth that has surprised you?
I have loved the caliber of classes. I was surprised by how excited I was after my first financial accounting class to dive into the homework. The professors focus on teaching concepts you’ll truly use, rather than just chasing grades, which I deeply appreciate after time in the workforce.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I’m most excited about traveling with my classmates. Before orientation, I joined a Random Walk to Ecuador, where I got to explore the Amazon rainforest and bond with new friends. It was an unforgettable experience. Booth has incredible trek opportunities throughout the year, from Colombia to China to South Africa, and I can’t wait to keep exploring the world alongside such an inspiring group of people.
