Sylvia Poulos, Georgetown McDonough MiM Class of 2026

Age: 22
Hometown: Council Bluffs, Iowa
Undergraduate Institution and Major: I attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where I majored in Hospitality, Restaurant, and Tourism Management.
Pre-MiM Work Experience: Prior to the MiM, I spent two years working in luxury event planning and execution, most notably at The Country Club of Lincoln, where I supported high-end private events, weddings, and large-scale member functions. In between roles, I took on independent event projects for private clients, including family and community events, which allowed me to manage timelines, vendor coordination, and client relationships firsthand.

To deepen my understanding of the industry, I also spent time learning directly from experienced florists and wedding planners, gaining exposure to every layer of event production, from design and sourcing to logistics and on-site execution. These experiences gave me a well-rounded, behind-the-scenes view of what it takes to deliver luxury experiences.

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I reached a point where I knew I didn’t just want to execute great experiences; I wanted to design, scale, and lead them. Business school felt like the natural next step to sharpen my strategic, analytical, and leadership skills so I could pair my hospitality background with a strong business toolkit. The timing felt right because I had enough experience to know what I wanted to grow into, while still being early enough in my career to be intentional about shaping my path.

Why did you choose Georgetown McDonough? What factors figured most prominently into your decision?
When I first visited Georgetown years ago, I was completely taken aback. The campus and the city quite literally took my breath away. Georgetown McDonough stood out because of its values, culture, global perspective, and emphasis on leadership. I was drawn to the collaborative environment, the strength of the MiM program, and the school’s connection to real-world impact. It was clear that McDonough develops leaders who are both sharp and human, which mattered deeply to me.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the class?
I bring a people-first mindset shaped by hospitality, combined with leadership and entrepreneurial experience. I naturally build community and keep teams energized. I also enjoy connecting ideas across disciplines, so whether it’s a case discussion or a group project, I aim to bring both strategic thinking and positive momentum to the room.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I met the former CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA at the 2025 Masters Tournament, where I was working as a Mercedes cabin server.

Post-MiM career interests:
Post-MiM, I am interested in roles at the intersection of business strategy, events, and brand experience within hospitality, luxury brands, or large-scale experiential organizations. Long term, I aspire to own and operate a luxury event venue.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would absolutely take the time to reflect deeply before writing. Understanding why I wanted the MiM and what I uniquely bring made my application stronger and more authentic.

What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would trust myself earlier in the process. I spent months reevaluating and shaping what I wanted my future to look like and often questioned whether my background would affect my place in the program. In reality, it has allowed me to connect with more people. It’s easy to overthink, but the application is strongest when you are honest and confident in your story.

What is one part you would have skipped if you could, and what helped you get through it?
The waiting was by far the hardest part. What helped was staying busy and continuing to grow professionally. I reminded myself that the process itself was already an accomplishment.

What is your initial impression of the Georgetown McDonough students, culture, and community?
The McDonough community is incredibly welcoming, motivated, warm, and collaborative. People are impressive without being intimidating, and there is a genuine sense that everyone wants to see each other succeed. As an MiM Ambassador, I am able to help represent the program and guide students on their Georgetown journey, which makes me incredibly grateful to be part of this community.

What is one thing you have learned about Georgetown McDonough that has surprised you?
I have been surprised by how genuinely involved and eager the alumni community is to help. From coffee chats to career advice, alumni truly go out of their way to support current students. What is especially unique is how far that network extends beyond campus. Wearing Georgetown or McDonough merch around D.C., and even while traveling, I have struck up spontaneous conversations with alumni and Hoyas from all over the world. It is a powerful reminder that Georgetown is not just a school, but a global community that shows up for each other.
