Created ten years ago, the renowned Access MBA Tour travels to 65 cities every year with a hundred international business schools. Access MBA gives selected candidates the chance to meet individually with admissions directors of top-tier MBA programs. MBA candidates have twenty minutes to convince admissions representatives of their strengths as a candidate as well as to determine which MBA program is the best for them.
Representatives of full-time, part-time and distance learning programs will be present at the sixth annual New York City One-to-One event taking place Wednesday, May 22nd 2013 from 4pm to 9:30pm at the Warwick New York Hotel.

For the ninth year running, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business Office of Full-Time Admissions will partner with the Chicago Women in Business Alumnae Network (CWIBAN) to host events in cities around the world for female prospective and newly admitted students. Women’s Week 2013 will take place from May 4th through 22nd, featuring a range of events from Los Angeles to New York to London to Shanghai.
The casual, informal events are designed to help female prospective applicants and newly admitted students learn from Chicago Booth current students and alumnae about what they have done to be successful at Booth and beyond.
“Depending on your city, some events are intimate, while others are quite large,” wrote Associate Director of Admissions Joanne Legler in a recent post on the Booth Insider Blog. “No matter the size or location, CWIBAN and Admissions plan these events each year to give you a chance to speak to a group of women who have been there, done that, and thrived both as Booth students and in their careers,” she continued.

Today and tomorrow, April 4th and 5th, Harvard Business School (HBS) is hosting a summit designed to help accelerate the advancement of women leaders who make a difference in the world.
Called the W50 Summit, the two-day event is part of a year-long celebration marking the 50th anniversary of women being admitted to the two-year MBA program.

Later this week, students at Wharton | San Francisco, the West Coast campus of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, will host the Wharton San Francisco Social Impact Conference. The event, which will take place on April 4th, marks one of the first times students at the San Francisco campus have organized and run their own conference.
The event this week builds on an inaugural conference students organized last year jointly with the Wharton Social Impact Initiative, the Baker Retailing Center and the Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership. “The half-day event was attended by more than 120 Wharton students, alumni and friends and was a great success,” wrote Raghavan Anand in a Wharton Magazine blog post. “So we decided to continue the tradition, except to organize and run it ourselves this time around,” he continued.

Admissions staff from top schools like Harvard Business School (HBS) and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania are circling the globe in the weeks ahead to meet prospective applicants in the countries where they live.
Next week, HBS will host MBA Admissions events in Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai* and Beijing. South American events, in Peru and Argentina, are scheduled for later in the summer, in July. These outreach events are designed to give prospective applicants an opportunity to meet representatives from the HBS community and learn more about the MBA program and the admissions process. I’m entertaining the thought of pivoting my career by earning an MBA, but can’t tell if I’m being delusional or not. I’d appreciate if you could give me a reality check on if I should even continue researching how to pursue this path.

Education and Scores:
BA in Biology (3.61 GPA) from an Ivy League School
MS in Entomology (4.0 GPA) from a Big 10 School
GRE score equivalent to 161V and 161Q when I took it in 2013 without preparation
Probably irrelevant, but I also have one first author scientific publication in a peer reviewed journal that has been citied over 50 times from my master’s research.
Work Experience:
8 years working as a biologist for an Agriculture Department primarily doing regulatory inspections (e.g. pesticides, quarantines, organic farms, etc). Currently earning 155k/year, but my salary is mostly capped now and promotion opportunities are almost non-existent (the last open position for a promotion in my department was in 2020).
My work experience involves some supervisory experience but it is not a management role. It centers around knowing state regulations/laws and applying them when doing various types of agricultural inspections.
This is my first job out of graduate school.
Extracurriculars:
Unfortunately I’m lacking in this area, but can look for volunteer opportunities.
Recently had a certification to teach high school biology if that counts.
I was the department wellness coordinator and I am also part of the department equity committee at work. I am also the graphic designer for my department.
Background:
I know my profile is completely unrelated to business when compared to other MBA applicants. My initial education and career path was driven by my desire to study what I found interesting and then working in a related field afterwards. I have no regrets about my former path but now I’m wondering if I want more out of my career rather than remain in government. I was thinking an MBA from a top school can facilitate a complete career pivot from where I currently am.
Why I want to pivot:
I currently work 4 days a week in an stress-free environment with phenomenal work-life balance but my opportunities for professional growth is limited and my skill development is stagnating in this role. I’m also feeling bored in my career. I no longer feel driven to stay working in my field of study like I did in the past. I mostly just want the potential to earn more money as my husband and I are expecting to grow our family in the next few years.
So what’s the verdict, am I being ridiculous by even thinking I can get into an upper MBA program and pivoting careers? I appreciate any insights you have.
