Why business school? Why now?
I believe success comes with the continuous circle of learning, applying the knowledge, and obtaining the experience. In my case, I was determined that after obtaining 3-4 years of work experience, I would go back to studies. After about two years at the Central Bank I recognized that I was interested in pursuing business school and an MBA in particular. I wanted to continue expanding my knowledge in areas of finance, accounting, strategy, and statistics.

Additionally, an MBA degree can be very unique in the terms of its liquidity to shift between different industries. This gives you the extra edge.

Why HEC? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?

  1. I was raised in Asia and have completed my bachelor’s in America. Therefore Europe was the next logical place to explore. Alongside my academic pursuits, I was eager to discover the European culture and lifestyle.
  2. Most European schools offer a 1-year MBA program. However, I wanted an internship while I studied. Therefore, a 16-month MBA program at HEC Paris encompassed everything I was aiming for.
  3. Lastly, it was the location. Paris embodies the spirit of a global hub and opens doors to limitless opportunities.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2020?
Being the first MBA candidate from Mongolia at HEC Paris, I bring a fresh perspective. Having worked for the government I can share my professional experience with the class. Additionally, I carry a desire and devotion to build global networks with both students and alumnus.

Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I am a nomad and an adventurer. Going back to my nomadic roots, it is in my blood to constantly stay on the move and explore new places.

Post-MBA career interests?
Investment banking and strategy consulting.

Advice to current prospective applicants:

One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
The Essay. Writing an essay can be one of the most stressful stages of the application process. Nevertheless, looking back on it, I’m grateful for the opportunity it gave me to reflect.

One thing you would change or do differently?
Worrying less about fitting into every component the school is looking for on paper. Being yourself, embracing and even showcasing your uniqueness is an important aspect of your application. It is a great feeling knowing that the school appreciates your background and individuality.

Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The standardized tests. Studying for GMAT/GRE while working full-time fills up your schedule. My advice would be to find an equally disciplined study partner and begin the preparation as early as possible. In my belief, relentless practice is the key with standardized tests.

What is your initial impression of the HEC Paris culture/community?
I think it is important to visit the campus, meet with staff, and hopefully with some students beforehand in order to get the genuine sense of the environment. In my experience, everyone was exceptionally welcoming and accommodating at HEC.

One thing you have learned about HEC Paris that has surprised you?
I was surprised with its effort and hands-on approach to help students thrive. Even several months before the program began, the school started preparing us for the internship search by supplying with necessary guidelines, materials, and advice.

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
Balancing the academic workload with personal life, networking, club activities, and internship search. This is what business school is really about: learning to prioritize and utilize your time as efficiently as possible. Like we frequently say in Mongolia, it is essential to start well in order to finish well.

Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
The journey. Some of the best moments in life happen when we leave our comfort zone. Pursuing MBA opens the door to not only numerous opportunities but also to an adventurous journey. Adjusting to a new place, learning the new culture, overcoming challenges, and crafting new ideas among the brightest minds from around the world is a gratifying experiences.
