Age: 27
Hometown: Mumbai, India
Undergraduate Institution and Major: University of Mumbai, Accounting
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): I started my career at a CPA firm in India, followed by 3 years of work experience in the life insurance industry, mainly in strategic planning and corporate finance. Before coming to business school, I worked at a nonprofit in Mumbai helping other education nonprofits develop fundraising strategies.

Why business school? Why now?
One of the major objectives I had coming to business school at this stage of my career was to transition into a role with greater impact. Having worked in finance for most of my career, I felt the need to broaden my skill set to develop big picture thinking and a global perspective. I think business school is a great place to work on leadership and interpersonal skills and build a network of some amazing people.

Why UNC Kenan-Flagler? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
Diversity and culture were my top considerations while deciding on a business school. Reaching out to the students and getting their insights really helped me determine my fit with the school. Kenan-Flagler has a top-notch finance program with widespread alumni network in this field, which factored highly in making my decision.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2022?
I really enjoy working with numbers. I hope to use my interest and skills to make numbers fun for my classmates.

Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I spent one year working in France and visited more than 10 countries during this year. I had some amazing experiences and made some great new friends along the way.

Post-MBA career interests?
I have enjoyed working in the finance industry and I want to continue with the industry in a more strategic and impactful role.

Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Self-reflection – Even though the application process is challenging, use this as an opportunity to understand yourself better: your strengths and weaknesses, priorities and career goals.

–One thing you would change or do differently?
I would visit the school during the application process. I was unable to do that due to time constraints, but I would definitely recommend visiting the school to understand the culture and to assess fit with the school.

–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The worry. I felt like the waiting time between the application and the result was particularly difficult. What helped me through it was staying positive and trusting the process.

What is your initial impression of UNC Kenan-Flagler’s students/culture/community?
UNC Kenan-Flagler has a close-knit community. Students, faculty and the staff are highly supportive and encouraging. The school also has an excellent support system for international students.

One thing you have learned about UNC Kenan-Flagler that has surprised you?

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
Business school is full of amazing opportunities. Prioritizing ones that fit my interests and letting go of the others makes me a bit anxious.

I’m excited to be a student again and to go through a journey of self-development.
