Age: 25
Hometown: London, U.K.
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Harvard University, South Asian Studies
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): 2 years in finance, 1 year in cryptocurrency

Why business school? Why now?
I want to pivot careers and be immersed in an environment where I can learn from smart people who have had a range of different experiences. This felt like the right time to do an MBA since I’ve had a few years of professional experience to draw from, but I also still have a huge amount to learn from others.

Why Oxford? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I found the 1-year nature of the programme appealing as I don’t want to take too much time out of the workforce. Also, since I attended University in America, I wanted to get the experience of higher education in Britain, at an institution with as much history as Oxford.  The diverse, inclusive nature of the Oxford students I met during the application process was another important factor in my decision.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2020?
I am a member of the British Fencing Team and can speak to the challenges and rewards of balancing international-level sport with career ambitions. I am currently training towards a possible spot at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. I’m excited to be pursuing that challenge while working towards a world-class MBA degree.

Post-MBA career interests?
I would like to work for a Tech or Media company, ideally in a role with an international focus.

Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Reach out to alumnae. I knew I wanted to attend Oxford after talking to an alum who had successfully gone to the Rio Olympics in the same year she completed her MBA. I was so inspired by her story and wanted to follow in her footsteps.

–One thing you would change or do differently?
I would apply in an earlier round. I applied quite late and I was fortunate that things worked out, but, you make it easier for yourself if you can get your application in sooner rather than later.

–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
If you’re studying for the GMAT or the GRE don’t waste too much time reading through test-help books. You won’t retain much unless you start testing yourself. Get started on the practice tests as soon as you can. In the end, I felt prepared by doing as many practice tests as I could.

What is your initial impression of Oxford’s students/culture/community?
My impression of Oxford’s culture was a big factor in my decision to attend. I was impressed by the diverse, inclusive nature of the Oxford students I met during the application process. That is extremely important to me, both in the workplace and the classroom, as I believe I learn better when surrounded by diversity of experience and thought.

One thing you have learned about Oxford that has surprised you?
I was surprised by just how international Oxford is. I had the impression that Oxford would be quintessentially English and, while it is in some ways, the minute you set foot on campus you meet students from all over the world.

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
I’m concerned that I may suffer from “FOMO” and throw myself into too many activities. I don’t want to spread myself too thin as i will already be committed to the course and fencing.

Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I can’t wait to meet my fellow classmates. I feel privileged to be in an environment with smart, interesting people and I’m looking forward to learning from them.
