Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): Film Production (Director of Photography, Producer), 6 years

Why business school? Why now?
During the time of disruption in the Entertainment industry, I want to have an impact on what content reaches the audience. Having been on the production side of the industry, I learned that the decision making comes from the business side and I knew business school will give me the skill set to be a good leader.

Why USC Marshall? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I visited 3 other schools but Marshall students and admission officers stood out with their willingness to help. They had genuine intentions to help me make the right decision for myself. Community was a priority when deciding which school to attend, and there was no comparing USC Marshall to other schools.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2021?
My extremely diverse background with a lot of work experience is something that stands out in our class. I believe my specific experience in film production in countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Germany, Singapore, UK, among others brings a global perspective when solving a problem.

Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I am stronger than I look. When I was working, I carried a 35 lb. camera for 12 hours!

Post-MBA career interests?
I want to be in the greenlighting room for film and TV productions.

Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I never thought I would say this but the GMAT. It actually helped me deal with time pressure, math, and the stress during my first term.

–One thing you would change or do differently?
I would reach out to current students to see if the school is the right fit. I applied and was accepted to 4 different schools. I realized only after I was accepted that the cultures weren’t good fits for me—Marshall aside. I could have saved time and energy if I knew before I applied.

–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
As contradictory as it may be—the GMAT. When I look back, it helped me a great deal. But if I could have skipped it, I would have. Before my exam, I made sure to meditate and do focusing yoga.

What is your initial impression of USC Marshall’s students/culture/community?
Marshall definitely feels like a family. Everyone actually wants to help each other and share knowledge. That energy is very infectious. Even myself – a strong introvert – started to reach out and become more open to speaking and sharing whatever I know. It is easy to do that because I feel like I am in a safe space. Also, the program does charity work with local organizations. To volunteer gave me the feeling of contributing to Los Angeles. Being in this program is more than acquiring academic knowledge; it is a full experience.

One thing you have learned about USC Marshall that has surprised you?
Finance is very creative—and I am coming from filmmaking.

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
I am most anxious about prioritizing. So many great opportunities that are presented to us and not enough time to attend/do all of them. So I am learning how to pick and choose.

Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am excited about all the city treks and “Day-On-A-Job” company visits. By listening to second-year students speak about their summer internship experiences, I have learned a lot about the industry and companies in more detail. I am looking forward to hearing alumni practitioners talk about the companies where they are work in more detail.
