Lindsay Bralower, Darden’s MBA Class of 2022

Age: 25
Hometown: Stamford, CT
Undergraduate Institution and Major: University of Virginia, Commerce
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): 3 years at in consulting + a pre-MBA internship at thredUP

Why business school? Why now?
While consulting gave me a great foundation in strategic thinking and problem solving, I was looking to pivot into the entrepreneurial world and develop myself as a leader in this space. Not only does an MBA provide the necessary business acumen, but it also provides an incredible network, resources, and mentorship that will be invaluable in my entrepreneurial pursuits.

Why UVA Darden? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
While in undergrad, I applied to Darden as a Future Years Scholar with little understanding of what differentiated Darden from other programs. After exploring other schools and gaining several years of work experience, I felt Darden would provide the best overall opportunity for my personal and professional growth. The case method and core curriculum put you in the driver’s seat for a wide range of problems, the alumni base is extremely supportive, and both Darden and Charlottesville have a budding startup community and a growing entrepreneurship curriculum that met my interests.

Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t say that life in Charlottesville itself played a role in my decision. Between the food scene, the access to the outdoors, and the expanding list of breweries and vineyards, it truly cannot be beat.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2022?
I like to think of myself as a community builder, and, now more than ever, I think it’s so important to be able to bring people together, find common purpose and develop meaningful relationships.

Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I became a big golfer over quarantine and even shot my first hole in one!

Post-MBA career interests?
In the short term, I am looking to transition into a role in product growth management, but I have long-term aspirations of starting my own company, as well as becoming an angel investor.

Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Take the GMAT in undergrad! It will save you so much time in the future when you are busy working and no longer in study mode.

–One thing you would change or do differently?
Figure out how to vocalize your “story” earlier in the process. Connecting the dots and understand the “why” behind each step in your journey will make the essay writing much easier.

–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Comparing schools with friends. It is truly an individual process and not every school is right for every person. Do your own thing and have confidence in your process/decisions.

What is your initial impression of UVA Darden’s students/culture/community?
The Darden community is extremely resilient. We are facing one of the most uncommon years for an MBA class with virtual classes, limits on gatherings, etc. and yet I have still been able to connect with my classmates and feel at home at Darden through it. Everyone here is making the best of a challenging situation with little complaint.

One thing you have learned about UVA Darden that has surprised you?
I was always told Darden had a reputation for being a tough program in terms of the workload. The rumors have definitely been true, but what has surprised me has been my unconscious development of delegation skills. With so many cases, it forces you to divvy up among your Learning Team and trust in others to get the job done.

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
I have been most nervous that COVID will push all classes into a fully virtual setting. Even with the hybrid model, I would still be highly disappointed to give up what in-person time we do have.

Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
Continuing to connect with my class as well as the second year!
