Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I decided to attend business school to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to run my own business eventually. After serving in the Army for seven years, I felt it was the right time to transition into the next phase of my career, one that would allow me to combine my leadership and operational background with new skills in consulting and entrepreneurship. Pursuing my MBA now enables me to round out my professional toolkit and prepare for my long-term goals in the animal healthcare industry.

Why did you choose UNC Kenan-Flagler? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I chose UNC Kenan-Flagler because of the strong sense of community I felt here. The school’s culture of collaboration and its core values align closely with my own. I was also drawn to the fact that UNC-Chapel Hill is a top public university with a reputation for excellence. On a personal level, this school holds special meaning for me; my mother is an alumna, and I have been visiting the campus throughout my life. Finally, UNC Kenan-Flagler’s strength in healthcare was a deciding factor, as that concentration directly connects with my future career plans.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
I bring a unique combination of leadership experience, global perspective and adaptability from my military service, paired with a strong interest in entrepreneurship and healthcare. Beyond my professional background, my identities as a queer individual and as a Filipino shape how I approach challenges and community. They give me a perspective rooted in resilience, inclusiveness and cultural awareness. While some classmates may share parts of my story, the intersection of my experiences, values and personal goals allows me to contribute a distinct voice to classroom discussions, team projects and the broader UNC Kenan-Flagler community.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I once lay on the ocean floor while manta rays danced around me as they ate their dinner. It was a surreal experience and one of the most memorable moments of my scuba diving adventures.

Post-MBA career interests:
After completing my MBA, I plan to work in the animal healthcare industry to gain experience and perspective before opening an equine sports medicine practice alongside my partner, a veterinarian specializing in equine sports medicine.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Attend an experience weekend or visit campus if possible. Speaking directly with students, alums and faculty made all the difference in understanding the culture.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I wish I had gained more experience in entrepreneurship and business before applying, as it would have strengthened my perspective and background further.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
I would have skipped the interview—it felt daunting at first. However, practicing common questions ahead of time and reminding myself to treat it as a conversation helped me stay calm. The interviewer also put me at ease, which made the experience more natural and engaging.

What is your initial impression of the Kenan-Flagler students/culture/community?
My initial impression has been highly positive. The faculty and staff genuinely want to build relationships with students and help them succeed whenever possible. The student body interacts well with each other, with no sense of animosity or unhealthy competition. The culture of UNC Kenan-Flagler truly reflects its core values of integrity, inclusion, innovation and impact.

What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join, and why?
I plan to join several professional clubs, including Healthcare, Operations, Consulting and Entrepreneurship, to deepen my understanding of each industry and broaden my career options. I am also excited to join identity- and interest-based organizations, such as the Pride Club, the Asian Business Club, the Wine Club and the Veterans Club, to build community and connect with others who share my experiences and interests.

What is one thing you have learned about UNC Kenan-Flagler that has surprised you?
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how committed the faculty and staff are to building relationships with students. Their willingness to connect on a personal level demonstrates their genuine investment in our success.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am most excited to attend conferences and industry events. They are an incredible opportunity to expand my network, learn from professionals across different sectors, and explore the many pathways an MBA can open.
