Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
After a decade in education, I wanted to broaden my impact beyond the classroom and pivot into roles where I could influence strategy, people development, and organizational change. Taking time for reflection last year clarified that this was the right moment to invest in myself, build new skills, and prepare for a career that combines purpose with long-term professional growth and stability.
Why did you choose Duke Fuqua? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I have always thrived in teams and believe in the saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go further, go together.” Fuqua’s Team Fuqua culture immediately stood out to me. What truly made Duke my top choice was meeting Lauren Sutherland, one of the admissions directors, at a pre-MBA Consortium event. She encouraged me through the process, reminded me that we are more than our test scores, and shared that she was also a Teach For America alum. That kindness, combined with Fuqua’s strong placement in consulting and the support of Consortium and ROMBA, confirmed it was the perfect fit.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
I believe my most valuable contribution comes from the perspective I bring. After a decade working in public education, I learned how to see potential in others, foster collaboration, and create inclusive spaces. Growing up in the Philippines, moving to the U.S. as a teenager, and later living in Japan have shaped how I connect across cultures and adapt to new environments. As one of the few Filipinos in my cohort, and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I carry a deep sense of responsibility to amplify diverse voices and build bridges across communities.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
One of the things I am most proud of is my penmanship. Growing up, I was often teased for having messy handwriting. In 7th grade, I sat next to a classmate whose writing I admired and used her style as inspiration while I practiced every day. Over time, I developed my own handwriting, and now people often compliment me on it. Thank you, Kristine!

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would attend as many events as possible, whether virtual or in person. They gave me insights that no amount of online research could provide. I would also reach out again to trusted friends and peers who helped me think through the process and refine my writing. Also, the “25 Things” Essay was a lot of fun and my favorite part of the whole process. I’d do that again!
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I wish I had started earlier on the GMAT/GRE prep to give myself more breathing room.
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Studying for the GMAT/GRE. Also, the waiting game after submitting the applications was brutal. What helped me was staying busy with hobbies and leaning on my friends/family.
What is your initial impression of the Fuqua students/culture/community?
One of my first impressions came during Section Olympics, when I performed as Rihanna in drag. I had never performed in drag before so needless to say, I was terrified (especially at business school!). However, my classmates were incredibly supportive and cheered me on every step of the way. Our section ended up winning and I was blown away by the level of support and open-mindedness from both students and staff. That moment showed me that Fuqua is a place where you can take risks, be yourself, and know your community will have your back. Team Fuqua is real!
What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
I am excited to join Consulting Club and FuquaPride, since they align with both my career goals and personal identity while giving me a chance to build community and support others. Because there are not many Filipinos at Fuqua, I also hope to get involved with the Filipino student group on the broader Duke campus as a way to stay connected to my roots.
What is one thing you have learned about Fuqua that has surprised you?
I was surprised by how down-to-earth everyone here is. My classmates are incredibly accomplished, yet they carry themselves with humility and openness that makes the community feel welcoming. I was also struck by how gorgeous the Duke campus is. I did not get the chance to see the whole campus before coming here and it has been a joy to explore!
What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I am most excited to learn and grow alongside my classmates. We just finished the summer term with only first years on campus, so I cannot wait to meet the second years as they return for the fall. I am also simply excited to be a student again. The teacher has officially become the student!
