Nicholas Maragos, University of St. Gallen MBA Class of 2026

Age: 30
Hometown: Milton, MA
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Suffolk University — Biotechnology, Minor in Chemistry
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Senior Case Manager, Pharmaceuticals, Vertex Pharmaceuticals (4 years)

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I chose business school to shift from operational roles in healthcare into more strategic, global work especially where biotech, investment, and innovation intersect. After four years at Vertex, I realized I needed a stronger business foundation, an international network, and exposure to Europe’s healthcare and finance landscape. The timing felt right because I finally had clarity on my direction, solid momentum in my career, and the desire to make a meaningful pivot while building long-term skills.

Why did you choose University of St. Gallen? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
St. Gallen offered the ideal mix of community, academic strength, and location. Everyone I met during the interview process was incredibly kind and supportive, and the small cohort size felt like the perfect learning environment. HSG’s strong reputation in finance and strategy aligned with my goal of moving toward more analytical, investment-focused roles. And being in Switzerland surrounded by major pharma hubs and an exceptional quality of life made it the perfect place to build  a career in Europe.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2026?
I bring a perspective shaped by hands-on experience in the U.S. biotech ecosystem, especially during a major drug launch at Vertex in Boston. Many classmates come from European healthcare systems, so I can offer useful contrast in discussions around commercialization, patient access, and how innovation moves through the U.S. market. Beyond that, I contribute by connecting people, sharing real-world examples during casework, and helping teams navigate healthcare topics with clarity and practical insight.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t make it into the application.
Since moving, I’ve learned how to make a surprisingly good fondue.

Post-MBA career interests:
I’m aiming to transition into the investment side of the pharmaceutical and life-sciences sector.

Advice for Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Commit fully and “just” do it.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
Honestly, nothing.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The overthinking. Making an informed decision, trusting it, and moving forward helped a lot.

What is your initial impression of the St. Gallen students/culture/community?
It’s a genuinely kind, supportive, and diverse community: one that encourages both personal and professional growth.

What student organizations have you joined or hope to join, and why?
Our cohort gravitates toward shared activities like hiking, group workouts, piano sessions, and cooking meals together. It creates a relaxed, social way to build community.

What is one thing you have learned about St. Gallen that has surprised you?
How clean, quiet, and walkable the city is, and how easy it is to travel to other parts of Switzerland from here.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
Learning from professors and classmates who each bring such different perspectives and backgrounds.
