Chaya Bhardwaj, Rotman MBA Class of 2027

Age: 29
Hometown: Toronto, Canada
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies at the University of Toronto
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Architect at DS Studio Inc. 2021-2025

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I decided to attend business school to build the leadership, financial, and strategic skills needed to expand my role within the architecture industry. I am keen to combine design expertise with business and management skills to create value across the real estate, infrastructure, and architecture industries.

Why did you choose Toronto Rotman? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
This is my third degree at the University of Toronto, a school that I value for its community, academic strength and variety, as well as its strong connection to the city. As a proud and lifelong Torontonian, Rotman was a natural choice. I was also drawn to the Real Estate Emphases that is offered through second-year electives in the MBA program.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
I bring a design thinking skillset from my designation as a licensed architect. My professional services experience also includes working with partners, suppliers and contractors in creative and technical industries around the world and across many cultures. I learned a lot about how to get things done, on time and on budget.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
As an architect, I worked on a wide range of design projects. One of the more unusual being the design of a camel in Dubai. During a conference project, our client made a last-minute request for a full-size camel sculpture to be branded and painted by a commissioned artist. Although based in Toronto, I coordinated remotely to source local artists and fiberglass manufacturers in Dubai, managing a tight timeline and successfully delivering my first camel.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I would recommend meeting with the Rotman recruiting team. They offered valuable insights into what the admissions committee looks for when reviewing applications and were incredibly supportive throughout the process.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would connect with more graduates of the program to get their insights about the keys to success in the program, as well as some of their personal highlights that aren’t captured in the brochure.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The more research I did about the MBA program and Rotman, the more I learned about the opportunities and the possibilities. It’s easy to shortcut this process. However, I found that it helped me refine my own thinking and improve my application.

What is your initial impression of the Toronto Rotman students/culture/community?
After being out of school for a few years, it’s been a lot of fun to be back in a cohort environment. The diversity of backgrounds at Rotman is incredible. I’ve already learned so much from classmates across different industries. Everyone is friendly, supportive, and genuinely eager to help each other succeed.

What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
I have joined the Business Design Club, Rotman Real Estate Association and Women in Management Association, as well as the Rotman Intramural Volleyball team. These clubs touch upon my personal interests and allow me to connect architecture and leadership.

What is one thing you have learned about Toronto Rotman that has surprised you?
The culture. It’s very well organized and highly supportive.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
So far, the program has been incredibly eye-opening from an academic and career sense. I’m excited to explore how my design and creative background can intersect with strategy and innovation roles. Rotman’s career services, clubs, and industry events provide countless opportunities to engage with new ideas and career paths.
