Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I have spent several years designing and implementing data science solutions for some of the biggest companies in the world. Despite the valuable experience and insights into the how of building solutions, I realized that I was often missing the why behind key business decisions. After observing and learning from several impactful leaders, I knew that I needed to complement my technical and soft skills with a deep understanding of business fundamentals, strategy and purpose. With the world progressing towards an inflection point in AI adoption, “now” felt like the perfect time to pursue a degree that can help me bridge the gap to strategic business value.
Why did you choose Toronto Rotman? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
My decision was greatly driven by my choice to stay firmly rooted in Toronto. Having lived here for 3 years, I’ve grown to love the incredible diverse and dynamic atmosphere of the city. Rotman was a clear choice within this ecosystem. Beyond its reputation as one of the best business schools in the country, I’m excited about the opportunity to learn from world-class faculty at the University of Toronto, and to a network in the city where I plan to build my long-term career.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
As a seasoned data consultant, I bring a structured problem solving approach to my cohort. Drawing on my experience implementing technology across industries, I hope to help my cohort by translating core principles that underpin data and AI transformation across industries. Having managed multiple cross-functional teams and worked with diverse stakeholders across regions, my teammates can count on my to ensure we operate efficiently and that every voice is heard.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I’m an aspiring calisthenics athlete, a budding chef, an armchair philosopher, and an expert in all things Tolkien!
Post-MBA career interests:
While I try to keep my horizons broad and my options open, my interests primarily remain in consulting and technology. I plan to leverage my prior experience as well as my MBA toolkit to pursue a career in digital transformation and strategy.
Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
I found the “spike factor” essay to be uniquely insightful in understanding my motivations and guiding principles in pursuing the MBA, but also in navigating life in general. Articulating my unique strengths and experiences gave me a better sense of who I am and where I’ve come from, and it’s a question that I hope to revisit from time to time.
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would take a longer break from work and commitments before joining the MBA program. Once you’re in the program, the race is on and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of time to stop and look around. Taking the time beforehand to travel, relax, and clarify priorities can be immensely helpful in directing one’s efforts from the outset.
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
If I could, I would certainly start the application process earlier and skip the procrastination and overthinking that came before I began putting words to paper (or screen). The pressure to turn out an excellent essay can be paralyzing, but it helps to write something bad so that you don’t let “perfect” get in the way of “great”!
What is your initial impression of the Toronto Rotman students/culture/community?
The Rotman community is incredibly diverse, and I’ve been delighted to learn from classmates who have backgrounds ranging from international relations and sustainability to accountants and emergency responders. We also have amazing professors who are committed to providing a world-class education. It’s truly an experience where you learn something new every day!
What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
Given my background and career aspirations, The Management Consulting Association and the Business Technology Association at Rotman had been natural choices for me to learn from and contribute to their incredibly supportive communities. The Business Design Club, with their focus on storytelling and a human-centric approach to problem solving, also promises to be a perfect place to develop the creativity and empathy required for effective business strategy.
What is one thing you have learned about Toronto Rotman that has surprised you?
The diverse, inclusive and supportive culture continues to be a source of surprise for me at Rotman. A typical day might start with a constructive argument with colleagues from across the globe, move into a case discussion with teammates from completely different professional backgrounds, and conclude with drinks and dinner with friends who regale you with their unique life experiences.
What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
I’m excited for opportunities to step outside my comfort zone and learn about domains that are completely new to me, such as sustainable finance and private equity. I’ve already had the opportunity of working with a fantastic team on a case competition for U of T’s Climate Week, and it was nothing short of illuminating. I’m eager for more experiences like that—to challenge my assumptions and broaden my perspective on what’s possible.
