Diana Stephanie Lara, Notre Dame Mendoza MBA Class of 2027

Age: 29
Hometown: Washington, DC
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Emory University, Business & Strategy
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Community Reinvestment Act Sr. Analyst, Banking, Citigroup, 7 years

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
After building my expertise in risk management, financial governance, and community reinvesting, I realized that I wanted to continue learning and developing my financial skills and be part of a community of students that were on a full-time journey to pivot, grow, or transform their careers. I had a strong understanding of the market and industry and I knew it was the right time to launch into a new learning environment that would challenge me and open doors to places I had never been before.

Why did you choose Notre Dame Mendoza? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I knew Notre Dame was the right place for me because of their mission to “Grow the Good in Business.” There were many competitive options, but no place where I could think about faith, values, and business altogether wholeheartedly in one place. This was crucial for my development as a future financial leader who prioritizes serving others while obtaining a world-class education.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
I bring a strong corporate social responsibility lens to the conversation while maintaining high regard and understanding of financial risks and priorities. Working for a large financial institution in multiple cities lent me experience and knowledge that help my peers understand what questions leaders are asking and how we can think critically about addressing AI and major shifts in the economy impacting our families and workforce today.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
This one is tough, but a fun fact that didn’t make it to my application is that I have all my wisdom teeth and actually had a supernova tooth come out at the age of 27.

Post-MBA career interests:
Financial Policy, Investment Banking, Real Estate Development, and Music!

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Be authentic and sure about why you are going back to school. Make it personal to you, knowing that the right place will accept you for who you are and the potential they are going to foster.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
It worked out, so its tough. However, it is important to be persistent and never give up. If it didn’t work out the first time, try again, and broaden your scope because you may be overlooking the right school for you.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
I would have skipped the paid GRE/GMAT training because I did not commit to them well. I realize I have a different learning style and doing a self paced study was best for me. On the other hand it helped to connect with other young professionals who were going through the same process, especially with the Forte network for women.

What is your initial impression of the Notre Dame Mendoza students/culture/community?
It is a spiritually filled institution that encourages their students to be the best for the world. The people are genuine, kind, and value your input into the program and what you expect to get from the experience. The network is also incredible and there is a sense of being part of a big family that always wants to connect and reconnect!

What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
I was the MBA First-Year Representative and was honored to be a voice for my class in the first year. I hope to get more involved in the Real Estate Club, Faith Development Committee, and the IDEA Center dedicated to entrepreneurship and startups on campus and in South Bend.

What is one thing you have learned about Notre Dame Mendoza that has surprised you?
I didn’t know about the AIM (Applied Investment Management) Course that is available to participate in for a whole semester. This is a highly competitive course that simulates a real investment banking role where you take ownership over a stock that the University is invested in. The class is incredibly intense and highly rewarding!

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
Learning! I am most excited about being back in school, with professors, assignments, and exams that push me to  learn all the core finance skills and expand my understanding and expertise in business.
