Katie Bishop, Washington University Olin’s MBA/MPH Class of 2028

Age: 28
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Temple University, Economics
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Many different jobs! But most recently I was a Development Coordinator at The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I chose to pursue my joint MBA/MPH to study the intersection of agribusiness and public health. I believe that we are about to see a wave of innovation in the next decade, and I want to ensure that it is used to further improve people’s access to high-quality food. An MBA is a key part of that goal because in order to provide improvements at scale, I need a firm understanding of financial markets and global supply chains.

Why did you choose Washington University Olin? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
St. Louis is at the center of the agricultural industry in the United States. Being in this town is an asset for my career. Beyond that, Olin has a prestigious reputation and a fantastic faculty. It was a perfect fit.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2028?
With my interest in agriculture, I am niche by nature. But I think my love of public health adds another lens to view business through.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I once backpacked the Trinity Alps in California.

Post-MBA career interests:
Supporting agricultural technology innovations, whether that be through VC or supply chain management.

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Apply for all the scholarships, even the ones you think you won’t get. I never expected to get my scholarship, and it has made my life all the better.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would reach out to more alumni throughout the process. We have a great network at Olin and they are always willing to help you work out some ideas.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Studying for the GRE. My husband was incredibly supportive, and I am so grateful for him!

What is your initial impression of the WashU Olin students/culture/community?
There is such a strong entrepreneurial atmosphere. Its invigorating being around people who are betting on themselves.

What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
There is a brand-new club called SEEDS (Students in Environmental Entrepreneurship Development and Strategy), which I am very excited about. It’s open to any grad student at WashU, and I find immense value in working across sectors.

What is one thing you have learned about WashU Olin that has surprised you?
I’ve found my fellow students to be incredibly well-rounded and altruistic. It is a fantastic community for people who are business-minded, but value-oriented.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
There are few occasions in life where you can practice without risk, grad school is one of them. I am very excited to use this opportunity to deepen my math and analytical skills.
