Columbia Business School MBA Interview Questions & Report: J-Term / Alumnus / Off-campus

Published: March 6, 2019
Image for Columbia Business School MBA Interview Questions & Report: J-Term / Alumnus / Off-campus

My Columbia Business School interview was in a coffee shop with an Alumnus that graduated MBA 2018. The atmosphere was relaxed but a bit noisy.

Questions

  1. Why MBA
  2. Why now
  3. What happens if you don’t get into Columbia
  4. Walk me through your resume.
  5. How will I engage with the Columbia community, what clubs I would join.
  6. Challenges I face during work.

Interviewer seemed disengaged and didn’t know much about Columbia’s “recruiting” events for prospective students. Also didn’t know much about the Healthcare program though she was a part of it.

Advice

Read cues and notice when you are oversharing / too enthusiastic and need to back off.

Texas McCombs MBA Admissions Connection: Round 1 / Second-Year Student / Zoom
Questions Asked: Only one: “Why McCombs?” Interview Experience & Vibe: I purposely matched with a second-year student who shared my non-traditional background and was a fellow in a prestigious McCombs program. This allowed me to ask highly targeted questions about transitioning to traditional recruiting pipelines and understanding how I could be a part of said prestigious program. The overall vibe was warm, friendly, and encouraging, solidifying my confidence in choosing McCombs. Advice to Future Applicants: Dig deep into the long-term goals and core values of both McCombs and the broader UT Austin community. Strongly aligning my application with these values Read more

Stanford GSB MBA Interview Questions & Report: Round 2 / Adcom / Virtual
Interview lasted about 40 mins. Interview was very pleasant and I really enjoyed the conversation with the (adcom) interviewer. For context, I am looking to pivot from engineering into cleantech industry. I might be missing couple of questions in the list below. 1) How did you get to know about Stanford MBA program? 2) What specifically did you like about the MBA program? 3) Why is this the right time for you to pursue Stanford MBA program? 4) Why do you want to give up your well-established career/job and pursue a new path? 5) Are you Read more

INSEAD MBA Interview Questions & Report: Round 1 / Alumnus / Off-Campus
R1 alum interview, off-campus in-person, ran about an hour. Very conversational and felt more like a chat than an evaluation. It was resume-based, and felt that he clearly read mine. Opened with Tell me about yourself, then moved through Why MBA/Why Now, Why INSEAD, short- and long-term goals, strengths/weaknesses, and what I’d contribute to the class. Two behavioral questions: Tell me about a time I had to face failure and asked me to share an instance in which I lead a team/tough situations. What surprised most was the question about why I was applying from Vietnam as an Indian national. Read more

Note:

Wild journey since getting Waitlisted post-interview Round 1. Gave several updates, and got the phone call on 5/22. Had to decline it because they gave no $ and I'm holding a very good scholarship at Johnson. Best of luck to those still waiting, but if you get off the list be ready to pay sticker price.
