The following UT Austin McCombs interview questions and report were submitted to Clear Admit by a Round 1 applicant who was admitted. Congratulations to them!

1. Date/Admissions Round:

Nov. 14, Round 1

2. Description / location of visit and/or interview atmosphere:

I attended a prospective student luncheon at McCombs and interviewed later that afternoon. The luncheon was fairly casual and each table was a mix of candidates and current students. One of the deans spoke briefly and the rest of the time was casual Q&A at our tables.

My interview was in the admissions office with a second year student, and the atmosphere definitely reflected the friendly culture at McCombs. Overall the interview was very conversational; my interviewer would ask a question, I would respond, and my interviewer would follow up with any relevant experiences she had that related to my response.

3. Type of interview (alum vs. adcom, blind vs. application-based):

I interviewed with a second-year student. She had my resume ahead of time, but I don’t know whether or not she had reviewed the rest of my application.

4. List of interview questions:

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Why an MBA? Why now? Why McCombs?
  • Tell me about a time you led a team
  • Tell me about a time you had a conflict at work and how you resolved it
  • What kind of legacy do you hope to leave at McCombs?
  • What clubs are you interested in joining?
  • Are there any particular classes you’d like to take at McCombs?
  • What are your short term and long term career goals?
  • What is your backup plan if these goals don’t work out?
  • Is there anything else you’d like me to know that we didn’t cover here?

5. Commentary (Did you receive your admissions decision? What did you think of the interview? What surprised you? What didn’t surprise you? What might you conclude about the school based on this experience?

I really enjoyed my interview and connected well with my interviewer. Students and faculty at McCombs talk a lot about how the program is already strong, but will continue to gain prestige. After interacting with students and seeing the new MBA facilities that are under construction, I definitely understood why this expectation exists. Everyone I met was enthusiastic about the program and beyond friendly.

I did receive my admissions decision (admitted in R1).
