Age: 29
Hometown:  Ann Arbor, Mich.
Undergraduate Institution and Major: University of Michigan, Biophysics
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): Six years in Biotechnology

Why business school? Why now?
The experiences that pushed me to get my MBA occurred while working for a biotechnology startup as a scientist. In addition to my research responsibilities, I was lucky to participate in multiple business functions including fundraising, product development and collaborations with large pharmaceutical companies. I loved this aspect and gained a deep appreciation for the role these functions play in translating ideas into actual products that can improve healthcare.

Why Kelley? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I have a very practical goal for pursuing my MBA: to transition into a new career. The career services that are offered at Kelley are exceptional, and the relationship they keep with alumni and employers leads to a high percentage of students finding the right position. The employment data really speaks for itself.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2021?
During the Me, Inc session, all students take a personality test. My Keirsey personality type is the rational inventor. This combination of creativity and analytical thinking will be a nice complement to the rest of the Class of 2021.

Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
I have a delicious phở recipe that I love to make for my classmates!

Post-MBA career interests?
My post-MBA career interest is to transition into a business development or product management position in the healthcare industry.

Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Visiting all the schools that are on your final list. Physically experiencing the campus will allow you to better assess whether the program is the right fit. Additionally, the interactions with current students often reveal extra information that can influence your final decision.

–One thing you would change or do differently?
I would spend more time making sure that my resume communicates my personal brand in the most effective way.

–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Video Essays. They instruct you to act natural, but unless you are an actor/actress it is a completely unnatural experience to talk directly into a camera. It takes a lot of practice to feel comfortable in that situation and I would suggest starting earlier than you think. Luckily Kelley does not have video essays!

What is your initial impression of Kelley’s students/culture/community?
I visited a handful of schools, and everyone claims to have a collaborative culture, but in my opinion none of them come close to the experience at Kelley. Upon acceptance I received multiple handwritten notes to congratulate me.

Upon arrival I met many second years that were willing to go way out of their way to offer help. This community builds a great support system that allows you to be successful both in the MBA program and in your post-MBA career.

One thing you have learned about Kelley that has surprised you?
I didn’t realize how rich the history of Kelley was. They pride themselves on being the “first movers” and continually provide innovative ways to educate and advance the career of their students.

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
The core teams. At Kelley you are paired with 3-4 other students from diverse backgrounds for the first semester and you will work on many group projects together. I am anxious to see how we will bridge the gaps and come together despite our vastly different experience and personalities.

Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
The core, and especially the business communication class taught by Tatiana Kolovou.
