Age: 38

Undergraduate Institution and Major: University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, History
Pre-MBA Work Experience (years, industry): 12 years, International Development

Why business school? Why now?
I’ve sat through countless meetings in the World Bank, the United Nations, and in other international fora, where those around the table agreed that the private sector is the engine of growth and development. In the development world, is dogma that in order to create a resilient and peaceful society, a vibrant private sector is required yet they are never in the room. Instead of tirelessly talking about the sector, I decided to join its ranks and to be the change that I wish to see.

Why Kelley? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
Initially, my list of MBA programs to explore did not include Kelley. But, as I began to dive deep and check a box for specific characteristics, Kelley emerged as a hidden gem. I wanted to be in a small cohort, have a top ranked career services team, and a diverse student body.

I was also enticed by having all core courses front-loaded in the first semester, allowing greater flexibility to pursue personal interests. Finally, and most importantly, it was the people. I connected with everyone – faculty, students, staff, other prospective students – which gave me confidence that Kelley would be a great fit for me.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2021?
My professional background and experiences are unique. I have hands-on experience rebuilding a war-torn country from the ground up; I have been a United Nations diplomat; and I moved to Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak to help the government conceptualize and draft its post-crisis recovery strategy. This will allow me to bring a fresh perspective to discussions.

Fun fact that didn’t get included on your application?
Growing up I had a pet chimpanzee named Rambo.

Post-MBA career interests?
I am leaning heavily towards general management but also exploring a career in consulting.

Advice to current prospective applicants:
–One thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Visit as many schools as possible. There is no better way to understand the people, resources, and community than to experience it first-hand.

–One thing you would change or do differently?
I would have started the process earlier. From deciding to apply, to studying for the GRE, to completing applications, the entire process took me 5 months. I probably should have given myself more time.

–Part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
It would have been great to skip the GRE/GMAT. It is the most stressful part of the application process. I got through it by keeping the test into perspective. It was only one metric by which my candidacy would be assessed. I made sure to network and have well-crafted essays in order to ensure a holistic view of who I am and what I bring to the table.

What is your initial impression of Kelley’s students/culture/community?
My initial impression was that the Kelley community was caring and supportive. During Preview Weekend, I noticed students silently passing around a get-well card for one their colleagues. I was moved that they cared enough about one another to send a collective message of caring to one of their own. It was a simple gesture that spoke volumes about what the Kelley community is all about.

One thing you have learned about Kelley that has surprised you?
Partners are valued members of the Kelley community. I was surprised by how much they are integrated and seen as critical to the program’s success.

Thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
Completing the Core.

Thing you are most excited about in your first year?
Fostering relationships with fellow Kelleys. I look forward to learning from their diverse backgrounds and the breadth of experiences they bring to the table.
