Duke Fuqua Interview Questions & Report: Round 1 / Alumnus / Skype

I signed up during Fuqua’s open interview period and received an email connecting me with an alumni to set up a virtual interview. We scheduled a 1 hour Google Hangouts call. The alumni had a similar background to myself, so I’m assuming the admissions committee paired us up on purpose.

The interview started with small talk, “where are you located,” “are you working from home,” etc. Then the interviewer gave some background information about herself (what she did before and after Fuqua). Then she went through a list of questions. The ones I remember are:

Tell me about yourself.
Why do you want an MBA?
Why Fuqua instead of another school?
Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker.
What are 3 of your strengths and 3 of your weaknesses?
How would you describe your leadership style?
How do you plan to get involved at Fuqua?

The interviewer probed a bit into my answers, but nothing too extreme. It was difficult to read whether she was impressed or not. We finished her questions after about 35 minutes and then she gave me time to answer questions. I asked her 4 questions which took about 15 minutes and then we ended the interview.

Overall, I’d say I had a positive experience. I was nervous going into it because it was my first MBA interview, but nothing surprising or unexpected came up. I’m hoping for good news when I hear back from Fuqua in a few weeks.
