Luis Rivera III, Duke Fuqua MMS Class of 2026
Age: 23
Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Wabash College, Psychology major
Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I chose to attend business school to build on my psychology background, where I learned how people think, interact, and make decisions. I wanted to understand how those insights can translate into strategy and leadership in the business world. I also wanted to explore different career paths, like consulting, sales, and finance, to find where my skills and interests align most naturally. While I don’t have all of the answers yet, these first few months have certainly provided me with some clarity.
Why did you choose Duke Fuqua? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
As a Raleigh native, I was excited by the idea of coming home after spending four years in the Midwest. Duke Fuqua is one of the top business schools in the country, and what sets it apart for me is the community. Coming from a small and tight-knit undergraduate college, I wanted a similar environment in graduate school. During my campus visit last Fall, I met incredible students who made me feel like I could do more than succeed here, but that I could truly thrive. The Team Fuqua spirit wasn’t just a slogan or hashtag; it was something I could feel. And beyond Fuqua, Duke has this fun, energetic school culture that makes the whole experience even better. The campus energy and school spirit are unmatched, and I knew I wouldn’t get that anywhere else.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the class?
I think my most valuable contribution to the class is the perspective I bring from my background and the way I show up for others. As someone who is Black, Latino, and part of the LGBTQ+ community, I bring perspectives that are not always widely represented in business programs. I also serve as a Class Representative through the MMS Fellows program, where I send a weekly newsletter to keep my classmates informed and connected. Above all, I try to lead with kindness and empathy, making sure everyone feels included and seen.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I’ve recently gotten into yoga, and I’ve enjoyed starting my week with mindfulness and grounding exercises to stay centered and focused. This has helped me tremendously with managing stress and staying balanced during the busy weeks.
Post-MMS career interests:
I’m hoping to start my career in technology or medical device sales. I like connecting with people, learning about their needs, and helping them find solutions that make their work and lives better. I want to find an environment where I can keep growing, stay challenged, and make a real impact.
Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
After finishing my application draft, I reread it and asked myself if my story felt complete. When it didn’t, I went back and worked to layer in what was missing. Taking that extra time for reflection made my application feel more like me, and it made a real difference.
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I would have stayed in touch with more current students after my visit and admission. I met a few during my visit who shared helpful advice, but I wish I had continued those conversations in the months leading up to the program. Keeping in touch gives you a deeper sense of the culture and helps you feel more prepared before classes begin. Now, as an Admissions Ambassador, I try to provide that same ongoing support to prospective students. It has been a rewarding way to give back and help others feel confident about joining Fuqua.
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
If I could skip anything, it would be the GRE/GMAT. I’ve never loved standardized tests, but I was relieved when my first score came back stronger than expected. What helped me get through it was reminding myself that the test was just one piece of a much bigger journey toward where I wanted to be.
What is your initial impression of the Duke Fuqua students/culture/community?
It has been amazing! Everyone is friendly, intellectual, and genuinely supportive. There is a real sense of care and energy here. My classmates are both impressive and approachable, and I’ve already learned so much from them. From the start, I have felt part of something bigger than myself, and that sense of belonging has made the transition to business school much smoother. The level of collaboration and encouragement has exceeded my expectations in the best way.
What is one thing you have learned about Duke Fuqua that has surprised you?
I was surprised by how invested the professors are in our success. I expected a more formal or distant atmosphere, but they have been incredibly approachable and dedicated to helping us grow both academically and personally. Some professors stay after class to answer questions or talk about career goals, and others send follow-up notes just to make sure you’re doing okay. That level of care makes Fuqua feel even more personal and supportive than I expected. It’s one of the reasons I feel so confident that I’m in the right place.
I have loved my time at Fuqua so far, and I hope this can provide some helpful insight for anyone considering a Master of Management at Duke!
