Yu-Peng “Joey” Chen (陳昱朋), Duke Fuqua MMS Class of 2026

Age: 25
Hometown: Chiayi City, Taiwan
Undergraduate Institution and Major: Boston University – B.A. in Economics & International Relations
Pre-MMS Work Experience: Valuation & M&A Analyst, WauYuan Property Appraisal Co., Ltd. (Dec 2023 – Aug 2024); Asset Diligence & Valuation Analyst, Capital Assets Exchange LLC (Sep 2023 – Dec 2023); Business Development Intern, Civilience (Summer 2022); Management Associate / Assistant Manager, Chia Man Gas Station (Family Business, ongoing)

Why did you decide to attend business school? Why now?
I wanted to sharpen my analytical and strategic skills to move from being a hands-on operator to someone who can guide broader business decisions. After working in valuation and M&A, I realized I needed a stronger foundation in finance and management to really grow in consulting—and eventually bring those insights back to scale my family’s energy business.

Why did you choose Duke Fuqua? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
The people. I know that sounds cliché, but the “Team Fuqua” spirit is real. Everyone here is down-to-earth, smart, and supportive in ways that feel genuine. Plus, Fuqua hits that sweet spot between analytical rigor and real-world collaboration—exactly what I was looking for.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the class?
I’d say perspective and execution. I’ve worked in both family business and corporate settings, so I understand the balance between strategy and getting things done on the ground. I also enjoy connecting people—whether it’s helping classmates with finance concepts or brainstorming career strategies together.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I tore my ACL last year, which ended my basketball days—but it led me to golf. Now I’m hooked. The sport taught me patience and rhythm, which ironically helps me stay calm during intense group projects too.

Post-MMS career interests:
Strategy or management consulting, focusing on M&A, growth, or energy transition. Long-term, I want to bring those skills back to modernize and expand my family’s gas station business as the industry shifts toward electrification.

Advice for prospective applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
Talk to current students and alumni—it gives you a real feel for the school’s culture.

What is one thing you would change or do differently?
Start brushing up on Excel and finance earlier—it pays off once classes start.

What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
Probably the visa and document paperwork. It’s not fun, but strong coffee and good playlists help.

What is your initial impression of the Duke Fuqua students/culture/community?
Supportive, collaborative, and surprisingly humble. Everyone pushes each other to do better, but in a good way—it’s competitive against problems, not against people.

What is one thing you have learned about Duke Fuqua that has surprised you?
How real the “Team Fuqua” culture is. People go out of their way to help—even when there’s nothing in it for them. Professors remember your name, classmates stay late to prep others for interviews, and alumni check in just to offer advice. It’s the kind of environment that makes you want to give back.
