Natasha Chick, Texas McCombs MBA Class of 2027

Age: 27
Hometown: San Antonio, TX
Undergraduate Institution and Major: United States Military Academy – West Point, Systems Engineering
Pre-MBA Work Experience: Spacecraft Engineer, USSF, 6 years

Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
My time in the military sparked my curiosity about how business decisions are made. I had leadership experience and a strong technical foundation, but when projects were selected for acquisition or maintenance, I realized I lacked the financial and strategic context behind those choices. After six years of service, I wanted to round out my skills and better understand the ‘why’ behind major decisions.

When the Space Force sent me to its Supra Coder program, I discovered a new passion for tech and innovation. I went through a software development bootcamp and interned with a company building the Space Force app, Guardian One. That experience gave me exposure to marketing, design, and project management, and confirmed my desire to eventually start my own company. I knew I needed the financial foundation and the network that an MBA provides.

Why did you choose Texas McCombs? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
I wanted a program that combined a collaborative culture with strong ties to technology and entrepreneurship. I grew up in Texas and knew I wanted to return home to build my career and start a family. Austin is an incredible city for tech companies and the start-up world, which is what I knew I wanted more exposure to. I also liked the idea of a smaller class size of 250 people because I felt like I could connect with most of my classmates.

What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2027?
As a female veteran, I think my most valuable contribution is I bring a perspective shaped by high stakes decision making and collaboration under pressure. I’ve learned to weigh uncertain outcomes against potential impact and to prioritize team success over ego. I’ve also learned how to build credibility as the only woman in the room, balancing confidence with authenticity.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I learned how to surf while stationed in Hawaii and it was my entire personality! I am now trying to find an equally riveting activity in Austin, maybe paddle boarding on Town Lake?

Post-MBA career interests:
Strategy/ Corporate Finance

Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
Visit the campus! Preview Weekend sold me on McCombs. The people were so friendly, and I could happily picture myself studying on the 5th floor patio with a coffee from Moontower Café.

–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
I spent too much time weighing others’ opinions on which school to attend. Getting input is helpful, but your priorities are your own. Trust your gut.

–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
The hardest part was the fear of leaving my job. It’s daunting, but if you have a clear “why,” let it anchor your decision. You’re your own best advocate.

What is your initial impression of the Texas McCombs students/culture/community?
The McCombs culture feels genuine and down to earth. I have learned so much from the backgrounds of my classmates and it’s so cool hearing how all of our different paths merged to this shared experience at McCombs. The community is welcoming, football is a big deal here, and there are always so many events happening to connect with fellow students.

What student organizations have you joined/are you hoping to join and why?
I applied for Board Fellows, an organization that allows you to sit on the board of a local Austin nonprofit and assist them with a project over the course of a year. I heard about Board Fellows from current students during my application process and it interested me because it is such a unique opportunity to learn from these organizations and to also give back to the local community and support an important cause. I also joined the McCombs Ambassador Committee, Wine Club, Adventure Club, and Graduate Finance Association to connect with classmates through shared interests and professional development.

What is one thing you have learned about Texas McCombs that has surprised you?
I was surprised by how accessible and invested the faculty and alumni are. They don’t just teach theory, they share insights from impressive corporate careers and take the time to help students think through ideas or real-world applications.

What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
The ski trip! I am a proud green runs only skier, but hanging out with my classmates in Jackson Hole is going to be so fun.
