INSEAD Tops Bloomberg Businessweek Ranking of International MBA Programs

INSEAD pushed aside London Business School (LBS) to take the top spot in Bloomberg Businessweek’s annual ranking of MBA programs outside the United States, published yesterday. LBS slipped to second, followed by Spain’s IESE Business School, Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, and Switzerland’s International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in that order. Beyond Business School: Meet the Cambridge EMBA Who Is Rebuilding Libya

As an Executive MBA (EMBA) student, you don’t have to choose between your career and your studies, which was exactly the case for Roland Friedrich, who worked as a senior political affairs officer for the United Nations while pursuing his EMBA at Cambridge Judge Business School. Friedrich graduated with his EMBA in 2016, but through his studies he was involved in the rebuilding of Libya as part of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). According to U.S. News & World Report, a career as a financial manager is the third hottest job for a graduating MBA student in 2017, while a career in accounting ranks number one. Indeed, finance careers pay well and they offer robust job growth, low unemployment rates, and the opportunity for MBAs to use both their quantitative and creative skills. Cambridge Judge Empowers Women to Become Rising Leaders

Currently, only 26 women serve as CEOs of Fortune 500 companies—roughly 5 percent—and only one in six board members are women (17 percent). While the numbers are up from 12 years ago when there were no women CEOs and only 10 percent of board members were women, there’s still a lot of work to be done. Cambridge Judge Professor Talks Competition in Business

In business, it’s always about being the best, looking out for number one, beating your competitor—right? Not so fast, says Professor Shahzad Ansari, who teaches strategy and innovation at Cambridge’s Judge Business School. In a recent news article, Ansari presented a different idea. “You don’t need to blow out someone else’s light to make yours shine,” he said, quoting financier Bernard Baruch. “Going in too aggressively harms your own reputation and can wreck your business,” he added. Which Way the Wind Blows Could Determine the Fate of Elections, CBS Researchers Find

The heads of Congress are calling for greater investigation into whether Russian meddling played a role in Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton last month, but researchers at Columbia Business School (CBS) have another theory. Blame it on the wind—or lack thereof—they say. London Business School Leads 2016 International MBA Rankings from Bloomberg BusinessWeek

London Business School (LBS) climbed to the very top spot on Bloomberg BusinessWeek’s Best International Business Schools of 2016 list, released yesterday, up a notch from last year’s second-place showing. INSEAD, which has campuses in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi, followed right behind, inching up from number three last year to second place this year. The United Kingdom’s other powerhouse business schools, Oxford’s Saïd Business School and Cambridge’s Judge Business School, fell in line at third and fourth respectively, representing a three-spot jump for Saïd over last year and a four-spot jump for Judge. Spain’s IESE also experienced gains year over year, sidling up two spots from last year’s seventh place to round out this year’s top five. Read more

Judge Business School Alumnus and Faculty Member Develop Innovative Electric Vehicle Technology

Peter Hiscocks, senior faculty in management practice at Cambridge University Judge Business School, along with alumnus Erik Fairbarn, recently developed POD Point, a business that provides electric car charging stations in businesses, homes and public spaces. The innovative electric vehicle technology runs on a web or mobile app, which gives users a 15-minute window to cancel or continue the charge. Cambridge Judge Appoints First-Ever Female Director of the MBA

As MBA students arrived on campus at Cambridge University’s Judge School of Business (CJBS) last month, a new academic director stood ready to greet them. Jane Davies, an expert in operations management and process excellence, was appointed in August to serve as the first-ever female director of the MBA program at Judge. Her appointment nicely coincides with the school’s launch of a Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) earlier in the year, new scholarships for females in partnership with the 30% Club, sponsorship of a new Women Entrepreneur of the Year award and a continued focus on gender-diversity related research by faculty. While new to the role of academic director, Davies is far from new to Judge. Since 2009, she has taught operations management—including the school’s core course on operations—and she has twice won the CJBS Teaching Award as the highest-rated MBA lecturer by students, in both 2013 and 2015. Cambridge Judge Sees Seven Point Jump in Female MBA Enrollment

More women than ever—37 percent—make up the newest MBA class at Cambridge’s Judge School of Business (CJBS), which arrived on campus last week. “While most schools have also seen an increase in the percentage of women students, this is a big jump for us (last year we were at 30 percent with a smaller class),” wrote Admissions Director Conrad Chua on the Cambridge MBA Admissions Blog yesterday. Chua attributed the growth in female MBA enrollment in part to successful outreach by the school’s marketing team. The incoming class has 157 students, an increase over last year’s 145. Jane Davies, who was appointed this year as the school’s new director of the MBA, called it “restrained growth” in a recent interview with Clear Admit, adding that the school does not want to compromise on quality at all by increasing the number of students. The faculty, too, has grown in size over the past few years, she noted. Read more

Admissions Director Q&A: Conrad Chua of Cambridge’s Judge Business School

Conrad Chua met an alumnus of Cambridge University’s Judge Business School while working in business development and was soon sold on the school’s values and ethos. In 2009, he became head of MBA recruitment and admissions. Chua, a native of Singapore, worked in the public sector there for 10 years, but he completed his undergraduate education at Stanford and a graduate program at London Business School. “The masters I did at LBS really opened my perspective, and I decided I wanted to work outside Singapore,” he told us. Cambridge’s Judge Business School Extends Lifelong Learning to EMBA Grads

The Judge Business School at Cambridge University this summer becomes the latest in a growing list of business schools that are offering lifelong learning opportunities to some of its graduates. Judge recently announced that alumni of its Executive MBA (EMBA) program will now be eligible to return to campus to take free one elective per year. According to a report in PoetsandQuants, the offer, which had been available previously on an informal basis, is expected to attract roughly a third of the Judge EMBA program’s grads back to campus this fall. Cambridge Judge Business School Staff Obtain Social Media Driving Licenses

Staff at the Cambridge Judge Business School recently completed an innovative course designed to educate them in all aspects of social media. Thirty participants now have Social Media Driving Licenses demonstrating their proficiency, the school announced. The inaugural Social Media Driving License (SMDL) course took place over eight consecutive weeks between May and July 2014. Thirty participating staff members took part in a combination of classroom and online exercises providing a comprehensive introduction to social media, including its professional application, value, scope and limits. Fewer Grads from European MBA Programs Are Heading Into Finance

Far fewer MBA students from Europe’s top business schools are choosing careers in finance than they have in the past, opting instead for jobs at Facebook, Amazon and other tech firms, according to a recent report in the Financial News. London Business School (LBS), Cambridge’s Judge Business School, Oxford’s Saïd Business School, INSEAD and HEC Paris all report significant drops in the number of MBAs who have accepted full-time roles and internships at finance firms as the heaviest portion of the annual recruiting season comes to an end.
