That said, if you know you want to be in NYC post MBA, then there should be advantages of being in NYC during your MBA in terms of directly engaging with recruiters. You’ll also have a more concentrated alumni network in NYC from the New York programs. (0)

If a large enough company or not NYC-HQ'd, the recruiter for the roles may not even be based in NYC. However, wrong place to direct your energy. A company recruiter handles hiring for many roles, and is usually relying on hiring manager and referrals from people related to the role to determine who are the best candidates to advance. Always good to keep up with recruiters as they're a main point of contact for the process, but someone of consequence from the hiring group pushing your name is more likely going to lead to interviews. Being able to get more in-person access to NYC based offices from CBS/Stern may help, but also networking calls or video-calls has become a lot more acceptable in all industries post-pandemic. I'd be doing a LinkedIn screen to see if there are Ross/UMich alumni in those roles, or at least company, to see if the path is possible and if you'd be able to network. Also, figure out what area of retail you want; F500 mass consumer retail? Plenty of companies which HQ in Midwest with UMich connections, but may have those roles in an NYC office. Luxury or fashion brands? Probably NYU or Columbia have better connections to those spaces. Would you be okay working ~1.5-2 years in Chicago / Midwest at the first post-MBA role and then eventually working your way back to NYC, or is it NYC or bust? First post-MBA role does not have to be your forever job/company. Also, I'd research if any of these companies have core/target schools. CBS / Kellogg / Ross / Kelley types may be strong names in brand strategy, but as it's brand/product strategy in retail is not the IB/MBB/FAANG trifecta, will they be as rigid in which programs or care more on the candidate? If all your research points to CBS/Stern, then nothing to lose by sending a scholarship appeal to them, noting your Ross offer, difference in COL between NYC and Ann Arbor, specifics on why your preference is that program (classes, programs, people you've spoken to from those programs who's path you want to emulate) and how you could be an asset to their incoming class. Facts seems to suggest CBS/Stern would be better for what you want to do and place in NYC, but not worth ~140k + LCOL, so need to see how you can close that gap. (edited) (2)
